Overview

GRAD STU INSTR - ASTRO 104 (50% appointment) (Winter 2026) Limited availability position Application Instructions

A cover letter is required for consideration and should be attached and uploaded as the first page of your CV/resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position, provide a brief statement of interest, discuss relevant teaching experience and knowledge of introductory astronomy, and discuss any course preferences you may have. If you have held a GSI position at U-M, please provide the course title, number, term, and faculty instructor for each course taught, and attach a copy of your UM transcript. Please list all Astronomy courses for which you wish to be considered for this semester. Only one application is required; by submitting a single GSI application and listing multiple positions in your cover letter, you will be considered for all those positions. Course Description

ASTRO 104: Alien Skies: A Tour Through the Universe. In this course, we shall be traveling through space and time to visit some of the remarkable features of our Universe. Our spacecraft will be built from our imagination, and its destinations will reflect what astronomy and physics have revealed about the nature of our Universe. We will see the Solar System from different planets, look back at the Sun from neighboring stars, and travel throughout our home Galaxy. As we travel far, we will move back in time to see how the galaxies, stars, the Sun, and the Earth came about. The physical concepts needed to understand what we see will be introduced as we go, and some of these will be used many times during the course. Online notes will be available; students may use standard modern astronomy textbooks to supplement these notes and class lectures. Responsibilities
