Pearson Virtual Schools (PVS) is seeking a Principal Product Manager to lead the Data Foundation program as a senior expert and individual contributor. This remote-friendly role focuses on a strategic platform modernization initiative, blending deep technical product management with cloud data platform experience. The role emphasizes innovation in the software development lifecycle, including the use of generative AI and intelligent agents to enhance product development and user experiences. Remote-friendly with preference for U.S. Eastern Time hours. Responsibilities
Strategic Vision & Roadmaps: Develop and own the product strategy and multi-year roadmap for the Data Foundation program. Align with platform modernization goals, define milestones, and communicate the vision to stakeholders and team members. Data Platform Leadership: Modernize PVS data architecture and infrastructure. Drive a unified, cloud-based data platform (leveraging AWS or similar), establish single sources of truth for key data domains, and provide scalable, real-time data access via APIs. Ensure data governance, privacy, and quality standards from the ground up. Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead across engineering, architecture, data science, design, and business stakeholders without direct reports, using influence and thought leadership to drive decisions and timelines. Product Development Lifecycle Innovation: Champion generative AI and agent-driven tools to improve requirements gathering, coding, testing, and analytics. Explore AI-driven features for AI-driven insights or personalization within the PVS platform. Execution & Delivery: Oversee end-to-end execution from concept to launch and iteration. Write PRDs, define user stories and acceptance criteria with Agile teams, and maintain a groomed backlog. Prioritize features by strategic impact, user value, and effort; ensure on-time delivery. Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with Product Vertical leaders, Program/Project Managers, and executives. Communicate progress, challenges, and next steps; represent the voice of the customer and business to drive improvements in user experience and platform capabilities. Technical Depth & Decision-Making: Use technical background to make informed decisions on cloud data pipelines, databases, and modern data architectures. Ensure architectural choices support the product vision and scalability. Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay current with data platforms, analytics, and AI/ML trends. Pilot AI agents or event-driven architectures and scale successful experiments into features. Measurement & Accountability: Define KPIs and success metrics (data availability, performance, API adoption). Use data to inform product decisions and demonstrate program value. Mentoring and Leadership (Individual Contributor): Mentor junior product managers and product owners; share expertise and foster best practices in product management and AI adoption within the SDLC. Required Qualifications
Experience: 10+ years of product management, with significant platform or technical PM experience. Proven record of driving large-scale initiatives end-to-end, preferably including data platform or infrastructure projects. Domain Expertise: Strong knowledge of data architecture and management, relational and NoSQL databases, data warehousing/lakehouse concepts, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data governance. Familiarity with education data privacy considerations is a plus. Technical Acumen: Comfortable discussing complex designs with architects and engineers. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern architectures (microservices, APIs, event-driven systems). Understanding of AI/ML concepts and their product applications. Leadership & Collaboration: Excellent cross-functional leadership and stakeholder management. Ability to influence without direct authority, and experienced in Agile/Scrum environments. Innovation Mindset: Demonstrated interest or experience in AI, automation, and intelligent agents; track record of driving innovation in data-driven products. Preferred Qualifications
EdTech and Data Standards: Experience in education technology or data-driven domains; familiarity with Ed-Fi, LTI, or student information systems is a plus. AI/ML Projects: Direct experience shipping AI-enabled product features or integrating AI into product management processes. Cloud & Security Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS, CIPP, CISSP) are a plus given data sensitivity. Leadership in Matrix Organizations: Experience influencing across multiple teams and senior leadership in large organizations. Advanced Education: MBA or related advanced degree; consideration given to technically oriented master's degrees. Work Environment
Location: Remote with preferred overlap in U.S. Eastern Time. Occasional travel may be required. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with diverse teams across PVS and Pearson via video conferences and collaborative tools in a distributed setting.
