Peer Support Specialist - Postpartum and Maternity - Recovery Health Services - (Mon-Fri, 8:00am - 4:30pm)
Are you passionate about helping others overcome challenges and find their path to recovery? As a Peer Support Specialist in Postpartum and Maternity, you’ll play a key role in supporting clients who are navigating behavioral health and substance use disorders. This is a dynamic, team-based role that blends elements of peer support, crisis intervention, and personalized care coordination in a fast-paced and rewarding environment.
Overview Location: 101 Truman Medical Center, Recovery Health Services, Kansas City, Missouri. Department: UHBH Center for Recovery and Wellness. Position Type: Full time. Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Hours per Week: 40.
Key Responsibilities
Client Champion: Work with clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings to ensure their needs are met and they receive the best care possible.
Family Engagement: Sometimes work directly with parents or guardians to support the entire family unit, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Peer Support: Use lived experience to inspire hope, help clients reconnect with their treatment plans, and assist with setting and achieving personal goals.
Crisis Response: Be prepared to intervene in crisis situations, de-escalate when needed, and coordinate with the treatment team or referrals as appropriate.
Team Collaboration: Work with the interdisciplinary team to prevent hospitalizations and relapses, and help develop individualized treatment plans.
Documentation: Maintain accurate clinical records and submit documentation within 24 hours in alignment with University Health standards; manage Release of Information per protocol.
Productivity and Continuous Improvement: Meet productivity targets and contribute to quality improvement, fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for clients and staff.
Age-Appropriate Care: Tailor approach to the client’s age and developmental stage, ensuring relevant care.
Customer Service: Maintain a friendly, approachable, and professional demeanor with clients, families, and coworkers.
Compliance and Training: Stay current on laws, regulations, and standards; participate in required training and compliance activities.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; strong verbal and written communication skills.
Passion for working with diverse populations and a commitment to an inclusive environment.
Lived experience with behavioral health or substance use recovery.
Certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) through the Missouri Credentialing Board; if not yet certified, obtain within 90 days of hire.
Reliable transportation.
Completion of all required orientation and training within the established timeline.
Preferred Qualifications
2-4 years of hands-on experience in behavioral health, coaching, and providing support.
Active Missouri CPS certification, or obtain CPS credential within 90 days of hire; keep current to maintain assignment.
