Overview

Director, US Innovation Unit Communications The Director leads complex strategic communications initiatives in support of the Innovation Unit (IU) Communications Strategy, Corporate Affairs, and the Global Thought Leadership Agenda. They contribute to the strategic positioning of IU, Corporate Affairs, and Boehringer Ingelheim as a first-in-class, patient-focused center of excellence. In collaboration with the Government Affairs and Public Policy team, they develop and execute comprehensive public affairs strategies to engage health policy leaders at the state and federal level, with the goal of enhancing understanding of Boehringer’s research and innovation commitments and the company’s pipeline.

Responsibilities

Lead design and implementation of new strategic external and internal communication initiatives, and manage existing programs with measurable outcomes aligned to IU and related stakeholder engagement goals.

Align initiatives with IU CSFs (attracting prime R&D talent and partners) and corporate programs to enhance Boehringer Ingelheim’s reputation and position as a preferred R&D partner.

Plan and deliver IU contributions to key events (e.g., OneHP and OneBI), including the annual press conference and related activities.

Build and maintain trusted partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including the IU executive committee, Corporate Affairs, researchers, government officials, and patient groups.

Lead crisis/issue management and prepare response plans for key initiatives.

Monitor industry trends, advise senior leadership, and promote understanding of the company’s research and innovation commitments.

Lead selection and management of consultants/agencies to maximize performance, ROI, and impact.

Demonstrate OneHP mindset and collaborate across global and US teams, including R)OPU colleagues.

Requirements

Bachelors degree in PR/Communications (preferred), journalism (preferred, not required), or Marketing (preferred, not required).

Minimum of 12 years of experience in PR/communications, including R&D communications in the pharmaceutical industry; ability to build relationships and influence outcomes with and without formal authority.

Proven ability to develop, implement, and lead a global communication strategy with predefined outcomes.

Excellent project, event, and time management skills.

Strong integrity, negotiation skills, and strategic problem-solving abilities.

Adaptive and flexible with changes in priorities and the global marketplace.

Crisis/issue management experience.

Exceptional verbal and written English communication and presentation skills.

Pharmaceutical/healthcare experience.

Ability to work well in teams and develop collaborative internal and external relationships.

Ability to articulate and advocate for public relations programs and resource needs.

Eligibility

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Location The role is based in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
