Overview
Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter - Commercial Surety Location: Virtual IL, Chicago, Cincinnati, or Kansas City. Remote Working: Hybrid. Zurich North America is looking for an Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter - Commercial Surety to join our Commercial Surety team. This role involves account management, business development and analysis of a highly complex book of Commercial Surety Accounts. The hiring level will be determined by the selected applicant’s experience and the qualifications listed for this position. Responsibilities
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities. Qualify accounts to fit the organization’s appetite, negotiate terms and conditions, and close deals. Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account. Update systems with details of broker/client visits and account status within the required time frame. Calculate target price using underwriting tools accurately. Diagnose and develop recommendations to solve unique business unit and customer problems. Demonstrate specialized knowledge and expertise in products and industry. Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating manuals. Work at the highest authority limits on assignments with technical complexity and coordination. Basic Qualifications – Underwriting Specialist
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking, OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support, OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 1+ year of experience in relevant areas, OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 4+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support; plus Knowledge of lines of business and related regulatory guidelines; knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business; experience with Microsoft Office. Basic Qualifications – Executive Underwriter
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking, OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support, OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in related areas, OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support; plus Knowledge of Microsoft Office; knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business; experience working in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree Surety knowledge/experience and knowledge of regulatory guidelines Understanding of broker relationships structure Ability to analyze and understand complex credit assessments, trends, and strategies Investigative skills to understand business strategies, trends, contracts and long-term obligations Ability to articulate strategies and financial concepts with fact-based conclusions Experience managing/growing a profitable portfolio of customers Negotiation experience with brokers and large organizations Strong verbal and written communication skills Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is influenced by location, role, skill set, and experience. The combined salary range for this position is $75,000.00 - $165,000.00. The proposed salary range for the Underwriting Specialist is $75,000.00 - $125,000.00, with a short-term incentive bonus eligibility of 10%. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter is $98,500.00 - $165,000.00, with a short-term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%. Additional rewards may include bonuses and merit increases.
