Thermal Analysis Engineer - Orion Passive Thermal Control Systems (ADV000BG2) Position Description

Are you passionate about human space exploration, understanding the origins of the universe, and working with a diverse team to make a difference? We are seeking a Thermal Analysis Engineer to help envision, shape, and deliver systems for NASA pursuits in deep space exploration. This position is located in Houston, TX. This posting reflects a potential opening; candidacy is being evaluated as we prepare for possible final approvals.

Your future duties and responsibilities

We have an exciting opportunity for a Thermal Analysis Engineer - Orion Passive Thermal Control Systems to join the team with Nexus, a teammate company.

Perform and guide analysis efforts to: simulate and evaluate the performance of passive thermal control systems for future NASA vehicles and habitats, including the Orion spacecraft and vehicles capable of lunar or Mars missions.

Develop thermal models of space hardware or test equipment using Thermal Desktop analysis software and first-principle models with standard desktop software.

Correlate thermal models to flight and test results.

Assist in day-to-day activities including internal NASA JSC task and work package planning, technical evaluations, hardware development and verification, and reviews/input related to products and documentation for partners and programs.

Work to provide solutions to problems that arise during hardware development and on-orbit operation phases. Identify anomalies and provide engineering recommendations for resolution as required.

Participate in integration of Orion vehicle systems, including technical reviews, operation plans, and review of contractor data to close technical requirements, waivers, and exceptions.

Provide passive thermal control guidance supporting development, design, test, and verification activities across interdisciplinary groups and technical forums to ensure hardware performance meets requirements.

Support testing and inspection activities at the vehicle build site; experience with PTCS hardware installs and collaboration with floor technicians to identify issues.

Collaborate with colleagues across LM and NASA sites to resolve test, hardware install and integration issues, and brief Orion senior management on impacts to schedule or flight response changes.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with typically 2-5 years of related experience.

Proficient with Thermal Desktop/SINDA/AutoCAD.

Experience with programming in FORTRAN.

Experience with complex, vehicle-level models with multiple system interactions.

Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to use data to draw conclusions and support the conclusions when challenged.

Excellent presentation and communication skills in a team environment.

Requisition Preferences:

BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited engineering school.

Minimum of 5 years of engineering analysis experience related to passive thermal control systems.

Experience with developing and reviewing thermal simulation models of spacecraft hardware and systems at varying levels of fidelity (from detailed first-principle models to descriptive lumped-parameter models).

Experience with thermal requirements definition and validation of space flight hardware.

Knowledge of programming in Python or MATLAB.

Compensation and benefits

A reasonable compensation range for this role in the U.S. is $58,000.00 - $123,800.00, depending on experience and qualifications.
