Overview
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking experienced civil litigators to join its Special Litigation Division (SLD). SLD handles and coordinates high-profile, high-impact litigation for the State of Texas, with a primary focus on affirmative litigation to enforce the limits of government authority. Assistant Attorneys General in SLD are typically appointed as Special Counsel and litigate complex cases on a variety of subjects, from pre-filing research to appeal, in both state and federal court. SLD personnel collaborate with other OAG divisions and counsel client state agencies and OAG’s executive leadership. The OAG is a dynamic state agency with over 4,000 employees throughout Texas. Represents the State’s interest as counsel in significant, high-profile, and complex multi-divisional litigation matters at pretrial, trial, and appellate levels in state and federal court, including discovery, drafting pleadings and briefs, participating in hearings and trials, and coordinating with other governmental bodies Provide legal advice and counsel to client state agencies and the agency’s Executive Administration on significant, multi-divisional litigation matters Oversee preparation of cases for trial Analyze factual and legal issues and develop evidence through witness interviews, depositions, and other discovery Advise clients and management on factual and legal issues Draft bills and amendments for legislative consideration With approval from Executive Administration and Agency Press Office, may represent the agency publicly at designated events (e.g., press conferences, meetings, public announcements) regarding significant litigation matters Perform related work as assigned and maintain knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions Attend work regularly in compliance with the approved work schedule Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive information Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Assistant Attorney General V: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree Four years of full-time litigation experience as a licensed attorney Licensed as an attorney by the State Bar of Texas and in good standing; eligible to practice law in Texas by start date Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings; and state and federal laws, regulations, and rules Skill in legal research, writing, analysis, investigations, mediation and negotiations, reasoning, problem solving, workload prioritization, and proficient use of computer and applicable software Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively (oral and written) Ability to prepare legal documents, conduct research, interpret and apply laws, summarize findings, prepare cases and present at trial, conduct hearings, and supervise others Ability to receive and respond to constructive feedback and to work cooperatively in a professional office environment Ability to work in person at the OAG work location for the entirety of the workweek (unless otherwise approved) and to travel as required Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
