Overview
Gloucester County Building Inspection Department is seeking qualified candidates for full-time Inspector I, II, or Combination Inspector to join our team of Building Inspectors providing exceptional customer service while working with contractors and the public to ensure code compliance for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures throughout our community. The ideal candidate must enjoy working outside the office and be able to perform technical and skilled inspection work in the areas of building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems during various stages of construction, alteration, renovation, and/or repair. This position reports to the Building Official. Appointments may be made at the Inspector I, II, or Combination Inspector level depending on qualifications, department needs, and budget availability. Levels are distinguished by additional experience and certifications obtained. Responsibilities
Perform inspections for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures to ensure compliance with the USBC, County ordinances, and related state laws. Inspect building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems during various stages of construction, alteration, renovation, and/or repair. Use electronic permitting system to prepare and complete inspection reports and plans review checklists; maintain all necessary records pertaining to inspections and code enforcement. Takes inspection requests by telephone, in person, or call-in line and prepares inspection request forms; may testify in court in code violation cases as necessary. Review and stay informed on applicable codes and regulations (USBC, NEC, NFPA, and related County codes) and attend training to maintain required inspection certifications. Explain building-related terminology and code compliance issues to contractors, design professionals, and the public in a clear and helpful manner. Coordinate follow-up inspections and communicate findings to applicants to help move projects forward efficiently. Possess independent judgment in applying standards to a variety of work situations while maintaining tact and courtesy in interactions with the public. Minimum Qualifications by Level
Inspector I Possess a high school diploma/GED. Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades. Must possess or have the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of employment, ICC or DHCD certification in one trade (building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical) for both residential and commercial inspections. Inspector II Possess a high school diploma/GED. Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades and one (1) year of experience as a certified inspector in a local government setting. Must possess ICC or DHCD certification in two trade areas (Electrical, Building, Plumbing, Mechanical) for both residential and commercial inspections. Combination Inspector Possess a high school diploma, supplemented by college coursework in engineering, construction management, or architecture. Have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades and three (3) years of experience as a certified inspector in a local government setting. Must possess ICC or DHCD certifications as Combination Inspector One & Two Family Dwelling and Combination Inspector General.
