Who We Are Founded in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not-for-profit educational, historic, and cultural institution that owns and operates a large museum complex. Our mission is to preserve and restore 18th-century Williamsburg, Virginia’s colonial capital and to engage, inform, and inspire people to learn about this history and the diverse peoples who helped shape a new nation. The Foundation operates museums, accommodations, restaurants, and a renowned research library, serving millions of visitors each year. About The Position Historic Interpreters work primarily with the public, creating thoughtful and engaging interactions across the Historic Area. Provide exceptional customer service, dynamic experiences, and inclusive interpretations to help diverse audiences navigate both current-day Colonial Williamsburg and its rich history. Essential Functions
Models excellent guest service, orienting guests, assisting with admission tickets, coordinating site entry, and using digital resources; recommends opportunities that excite and inspire guests. Utilizes 18th-century resources and modern interpretive techniques to bring the community to life through formal interpretation, tours, and informal dialogue. Demonstrates understanding of operational procedures, tour mechanics, security of buildings, and preservation of collections, artifacts, buildings, and objects. Participates in content training and professional development to deepen understanding of the past for the audience. Uses credible research to develop interpretations representing the diverse historical narrative of 18th-century Virginia. Uses digital resources to maintain time sheets, track schedule changes, and stay informed with work-related email and policy/procedure updates. Fosters a positive workplace culture through stewardship of resources, safety procedures, and professional behavior. Performs other duties as assigned by the Department of Historic Interpretation leadership. Maintains safety and security procedures to protect colleagues and guests. Meets all standards of the Department of Historic Interpretation. Required and Preferred Education and Experience
Required:
High School Diploma or GED Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in History, Communication, Education, or related field; or 12 months of work experience in museums/living history, interpretation, education, or customer service. Qualifications
Demonstrate aptitude for learning and sharing 18th-century history relevant to Williamsburg, Colonial Virginia, British-American colonies, Eastern Woodlands Indigenous cultures, West African cultures, and the Trans-Atlantic world; distill information for diverse audiences. Absorb and present meaningful interpretations to diverse groups of all ages and backgrounds; accommodate multiple learning styles. Model exceptional guest service; initiate conversations and maintain a welcoming demeanor with guests and colleagues. Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders to foster a positive work environment. Wear 18th-century reproduction clothing as directed. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and flexibility. Ability to work flexible schedules including weekends, holidays, and special events. Ability to work in varying weather conditions and potential exposure to allergens and insects. Meet physical requirements of standing, walking, or talking for up to seven hours per day. Perform effectively under atypical conditions. Demonstrate ability to use digital resources and electronic devices.
