Qualifications
Possession of a California Class C Drivers License.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent; successful graduation from a California P.O.S.T. approved Police or Sheriff’s Academy (Basic Peace Officer Course) or possession of a Basic or Higher P.O.S.T. Certificate.
Must meet POST citizen requirements (U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for citizenship).
Physical Requirements
Minimum age of 21 by the final hire date.
No hearing deficiency.
Minimum 20/100 uncorrected vision in each eye; corrected to 20/20. Must be free from tunnel vision or color blindness and no permanent/progressive abnormalities.
Weight proportional to height (within acceptable range).
Job Description Under supervision, perform routine law enforcement functions. Lateral, entry‑level position as a McFarland Police Officer. Officers perform the full range of sworn officers’ duties, including patrol and criminal investigations. New Officers serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months and are expected to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Duties
Prepare complete and accurate reports of incidents.
Operate a patrol vehicle and patrol assigned areas to keep the peace and protect life and property.
Investigate criminal violations; make arrests, prepare arrest and search warrants, and serve warrants.
Collect and preserve evidence; maintain records for tracking and legal proceedings.
Testify in court proceedings.
Attend and participate in assigned training.
Maintain knowledge of applicable state, federal, and city codes, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
Maintain knowledge of modern approved principles and procedures of law enforcement work, court evidence procedures, and court decisions.
Maintain ability to read and write at a level to perform all functions of a McFarland Police Officer.
Handle other duties as assigned.
Examination
Physical ability test (qualifying only): applicants must pass the exam to advance.
Oral exam (100% weight): assesses training, education, experience, interest, and personal fitness.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the exam process.
Background Evaluation Includes a psychological evaluation and assessment of overall suitability. Candidates must be found satisfactory in all aspects. Those previously found unsuitable must wait a minimum of twelve months before reapplying.
Compensation & Benefits Salary range:

City‑paid medical, dental, and vision benefits for employee and dependents.
Life insurance $50,000 (employee only).
Retirement: 401(k) with 10% employee contribution at no cost.
