Overview
Title: Temporary- Campus Police Officer (Pool) Institution: Volunteer State Community College Job Summary
Enforce the state, local and federal laws; enforce college policies and procedures; and provide a variety of security and enforcement services that promotes and maintains a safe campus. Job Duties
Promote lawful behavior and protect the welfare of students, faculty, staff and visitors as a uniformed presence on campus. Perform foot and vehicle patrols to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, maintain order during events and enforce policies, laws and ordinances. Seek solutions to possible problems before events occur. Respond to radio dispatches and calls/complaints; respond to emergencies and assist in determining cause or origin. Assist and/or direct securing an area and containing emergency situations. Investigate criminal offenses, traffic accidents, injury reports and other reported situations; document preliminary investigation reports. Make arrests and assist in the prosecution of violators of the law. Enforce traffic and parking regulations; respond to routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and transport of money on and off campus. Provide assistance to students, faculty and visitors with questions, directions, issuing temporary parking permits, opening/closing buildings and classrooms. Perform CPR, First Aid, and use AED equipment as needed. Report unsafe conditions; develop partnerships with the campus community and serve as a proactive resource to a diverse population. Operate law enforcement equipment (including lethal and non-lethal weapons) as required; use records management and college work order systems and other related computer systems. Represent the department at college meetings or functions and may perform dispatch functions. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be at least 21 years of age. Graduate of an accredited police academy and be a certified police officer meeting all requirements for POST certification in Tennessee. Meet the requirements of TCA 38-8-106 and TCA 38-8-107 for Police Officers; out-of-state applicants must meet Tennessee POST certification within six (6) months of hire. Prior law enforcement experience as a full-time certified officer within the past three (3) years. Must complete, annually, a POST-approved in-service training course totaling forty (40) hours. Must have no felony conviction or disqualifying findings related to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances. Possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license; out-of-state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver’s license within thirty (30) days of hire. Demonstrate good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation. Pass medical examination including vision screening and drug testing; pass a psychological evaluation. Successfully complete the department field training program within the designated time frame. Proficiency in firearms and non-lethal weapon operation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Substantial judgment and independent initiative. Effective communication (oral and written) and ability to coordinate resources; maintain professionalism, tactfulness, fairness, and decisiveness. Self-restraint in challenging situations with strong customer service skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural setting. Problem-solving skills; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to determine proper course of action. Ability to ascertain facts by observation and evaluation of records; explain and interpret laws, ordinances and regulations. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain confidentiality with sensitive information. Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in stressful situations; operate modern office equipment and meet written department directives. Required to work any shift assigned (nights, weekends, holidays) or other shifts/locations as needed by the department. Physical Requirements
Medium work: exertion up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, 10 pounds constantly; occasional heavy work up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling. Ability to escalate physical exertion instantly when necessary to subdue/restrain an individual. Vocal communication required for giving instructions; hearing for information; visual acuity for night vision, detail work, and observation of surroundings. Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold/heat, noise, hazards and atmospheric conditions. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens and required to wear PPE. As with any position in law enforcement, conditions may be unsafe. Pay Rate
