Under the direct supervision of a licensed staff member, the paraprofessional performs functions assisting in the educational, functional, and social development of students across settings to provide support to a student or students with disabilities. Responsibilities
Assists and guides students with academic tasks and functional skills as assigned by the teacher/clinician. Supervises and assists students with transitions in classroom and educational settings, during structured and unstructured activities indicated by the Individual Education Plan (IEP), both within and outside of the school building (e.g., lunchroom, restroom, playground, applicable community settings, additional activities). Provides academic, functional, and behavioral support to student(s) in accordance with IEPs and related support plans. Assists with communication, scheduling, and adaptations of curriculum and the educational environment to meet student needs. Works with students individually or in small groups as assigned to reinforce learning concepts. Assists with record-keeping to track and record student progress. Implements established classroom management strategies to ensure student safety, a supportive learning environment, and student engagement. Constructs, copies, distributes, and uses educational materials as directed and needed. Applies safety protocols and methods of assistance for students. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other staff to coordinate instructional plans and prepare for activities. Uses computers, instructional technology, assistive devices, and materials; supports students in using these tools (e.g., Google Suite). Attends staff meetings and professional development as needed/requested. Assists students with assistive devices and accessing facilities (e.g., restrooms). Implements therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and sensory breaks under supervision of special education personnel. Other duties as assigned. Education / Licensure
Minimum valid Illinois Professional Educator License with stipulations, endorsed for Paraprofessional Educator (see current IL qualifications for licensure) Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with 30 hours of college coursework Other Skills And Abilities
Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Motivated, energetic, adaptable to change; initiative and follow-through with responsibilities. Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally. Academic proficiency in mathematics and language arts and ability to support students with grade-level content. Ability to follow instructions furnished in written or oral form. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees, and others. Knowledge of curriculum materials and instructional techniques desirable. Professionalism as a student role model and in the performance of duties as a colleague. Bilingual paraprofessional positions require fluency in designated language to support translation of materials and interpreting if appropriate. Work Environment And Physical Activity
Position may require participation in training and use of established de-escalation and physical management methods for students. Work is performed in the school/district environment with typical temperature and noise levels; occasional physical demands include: Regularly communicate verbally, see, and hear. Push/pull, ambulate, perform tasks from standing and seated positions, and use fine motor skills. Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or move up to 25 pounds. Possibility of assisting students with activities of daily living, including toileting, diapering, and eating, as indicated in IEPs. Pay Scale And Benefit Disclosure
Salary is in accordance with the Paraprofessional Salary Schedule. Benefits include Medical/Vision and Dental coverage, FSA and Dependent DayCare accounts, Life/AD&D/LTD insurance, Tuition Reimbursement, Salary Advancement, IMRF contribution in base salary, and 403B. Terms Of Employment
The salary and work year are 181 days and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Valley View Council and the Board of Education. A physical exam and a negative Tuberculosis test are required. FLSA Non-Exempt. Application Procedure
