Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Full-Time | 37.5 hours/week | Occasional weekends/nights required

About the Role Morris Animal Refuge (MAR) is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, and mission-driven professional to lead our communications and marketing efforts. The Marketing & Communications Coordinator is responsible for sharing the Refuge’s lifesaving work through engaging storytelling, thoughtful design, and strategic outreach across multiple platforms. This position manages all aspects of marketing and communications, including social media, email, website, print, and press, to inspire our community and drive support for the animals in our care.

This position reports to the Director of Development & Marketing and works closely with the wider team to promote events, fundraising campaigns, and animal adoption initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Marketing & Communications

Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy to increase engagement and visibility across platforms.

Create and schedule engaging social media content (posts, stories, videos, reels) featuring shelter animals, events, and campaigns.

Manage the production and distribution of email newsletters, appeals, and updates using Constant Contact or similar platforms.

Write and send press releases, coordinate media opportunities, and serve as a point of contact for press inquiries.

Maintain the MAR website via WordPress, including updating pages, creating blog and news articles, and refreshing design elements as needed.

Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all channels.

Graphic Design & Creative Development

Design visual assets for social media, email, website, and print materials, including event flyers, fundraising appeals, signage, and donor materials.

Create templates for direct mail and digital campaigns that align with MAR’s brand identity.

Collaborate with team members to brainstorm and execute marketing campaigns that support fundraising and adoption initiatives.

Campaigns & Events

Support the marketing and promotion of key annual campaigns and events such as GivingTuesday, the Fur Ball Gala, and seasonal appeals.

Develop communication plans and promotional materials to maximize participation and donations.

Capture photos and videos at events and in-shelter for use in marketing materials.

Qualifications

1–3 years of experience in marketing, communications, or digital media (nonprofit experience a plus).

Proficiency with Canva or other design tools required.

Experience with Constant Contact, YAMM, and WordPress strongly preferred.

Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

Familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter).

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

Photography and/or video editing skills a plus.

Valid driver’s license preferred.

Availability: Must be able to work occasional evenings or weekends; on average, about one weeknight or weekend shift per month.

Compensation & Benefits

Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Starting pay: $35,000-39,000/year, commensurate with experience
