Overview
The Controller will oversee all aspects of accounting and financial reporting across the company’s real estate portfolio, investment programs, and management company. This is a key management role ensuring the integrity of accounting information, GAAP compliance, and effective internal controls. The Controller will lead internal accounting staff and external service providers while contributing to strategic financial planning, budgeting, investor reporting, property accounting, tax, and operational growth across all investment programs. Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance Oversee preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Ensure compliance with all regulatory and tax reporting requirements. Coordinate and manage annual external audits, tax filings, and related reporting processes. Accounting Operations Lead and manage the accounting function including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and property-level accounting. Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and streamline processes. Maintain accounting policies, procedures, and documentation standards. Real Estate Portfolio Accounting Oversee property-level accounting processes, including income recognition and expense allocations. Review acquisition and disposition accounting entries, purchase price allocations, and gain/loss recognition. Coordinate with asset management and investments teams to ensure timely, accurate property performance reporting. Strategic Leadership & Team Management Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team; set goals, training, and development plans. Collaborate with the CFO and senior leadership on financial strategy and risk management. Drive process improvements, automation, and system implementation to enhance operations. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with Asset Management, Operations, and Acquisitions leadership to support business operations and strategic initiatives. Provide financial and accounting expertise during acquisitions, due diligence, and deal structuring. Qualifications
Education & Certification
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred). Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Experience
12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role. Prior experience in real estate investment or private equity is required. Deep understanding of real estate investment accounting, property-level performance reporting, and transactional accounting. Strong knowledge of GAAP, real estate financial reporting standards, and internal control frameworks. Skills
Proven leadership and team management skills. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities. Proficiency in Yardi and other accounting or real estate software. Strong Excel and financial analysis skills. Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strategic mindset balancing hands-on execution with long-term vision.
