The Opportunity

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Substation Designer functions in a senior level engineering technician capacity. With minimal supervision, performs advanced functions requiring knowledge and use of electronic applications, standards, and document control processes/procedures in support of creating and modifying deliverables. May provide technical guidance and direction to other engineering professionals including delegation of work assignments. The ideal candidate will have basic experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and basic experience with Physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).

Job Summary Functions in a project engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables. Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions. Utilizes digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables. Provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.

Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards

Applies knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures

Quality / Continuous Improvement

Proactively applies knowledge of the Black & Veatch Quality Program relative to deliverables

Demonstrates personal accuracy and supports continuous improvement and change management efforts

Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency

Assists to ensure deliverables are in compliance with project-specific codes and standards

Engineering Production

Broadens the use of applications to improve methods, processes and procedures

Creates and develops deliverables based on design inputs

May develop less complex design concepts and project design deliverables

May perform computations such as development of detailed material quantities and estimates

Project Coordination

Coordinates deliverables with other groups on the same project to minimize interference or errors

May support field activities

May support project finalization including consolidation of records for as-built drawings or information to take off as-built quantities

Client Focus

Focuses on the needs of internal clients while understanding external client drivers

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology

Proactively seeks and shares knowledge of latest technologies and processes

Makes judgments and decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation

May provide work direction and guidance to others

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

Diploma or Certificate preferred

Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred

Typically a minimum of 3-8 years related work experience
