Position summary This position serves as the principal environmental, health and safety (EHS) professional at a Valmont manufacturing site. It requires initiative on special projects and will lead the activities of the site’s EHS-related teams. The EHS Coordinator will lead the implementation of Valmont’s Health and Safety Playbook and Environmental and Sustainability Playbook at the site. The role must align the site’s EHS activities with Valmont’s overall strategies. The incumbent is responsible for identifying sub-standard EHS performance using leading and lagging indicators and taking action with site and division leadership. The EHS Coordinator should assist others in growth of Environmental Health and Safety practices and interact with site production employees to identify and control hazards that can cause harm.

Essential functions

Assist in creating annual, site-specific EHS targets and objectives to measurably reduce exposure to the site’s key health and safety risks and environmental impacts

Identify action-based EHS goals for site leadership and supervisory teams to support achievement of targets

Act as the site-level expert in the company’s EHS database to manage data related to injuries, workers’ compensation claims, near-miss incidents, inspections, and environmental permits

Manage implementation of Valmont’s global safety and environmental standards (e.g., Hazardous Energy Control/Lockout, Confined Space Entry, Waste Storage)

Assist deployment of EHS teams (e.g., Safety Committee, Green Team) and facilitate engagement in ownership of compliance and continuous improvement

Assist with development and maintenance of training processes to ensure required EHS training is defined, content is appropriate, and tracked to completion

Assist with data collection, reporting, and permit submittals for multi-media environmental regulatory requirements

Serve as the site’s initial point-of-contact with national and local environmental, health and safety regulatory agencies

Assist the incident investigation process to identify root causes and help implement corrective actions

Formulate and implement actions on EHS topics and share updates with leadership

Facilitate the implementation of training programs to ensure regulatory compliance and incident best practices

Other important details about the role

Reports directly to the General Manager, with matrixed reporting to the Regional Safety Manager; no direct or indirect reports

Daily engagement with floor employees to foster a cooperative safety program

Conduct all safety meetings and safety committee meetings

Collect and enter data for all safety contacts and hazard identifications

Perform accident and near-miss investigations, determine root cause, and implement countermeasures

Collect and enter data for environmental regulatory requirements

Manage waste storage area, including record keeping, tracking and disposal

Stay current with EHS property conservation regulations and standards

Complete Valmont EHS Coordinator curriculum within 12 months of hire

Required qualifications (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

High School diploma and 5+ years of work/educational experience or a degree with 2+ years’ experience

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook

Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization

Ability to read, interpret, and develop safety policies, procedures, training materials and SOPs

Demonstrated passion and integrity with drive to excel and deliver results

Highly qualified candidates will also possess

Bachelor’s Degree

1-2 years of experience in manufacturing

Experience using Lean methodology in a manufacturing environment

Experience utilizing and maintaining EHS database programs
