The University of Missouri is seeking a field technician for a project on the nesting ecology of Northern Harriers in California’s Sacramento Valley for the upcoming nesting season (April-July 2025). The study will take place on public and private lands within the Sacramento Valley. Work will primarily involve nest searching, nest monitoring, vegetation surveys, and data entry. The technician will assist a graduate student in locating Northern Harrier nests, performing regular follow-up nest checks to monitor nesting phenology and success, performing vegetation surveys and collecting other habitat data, and data entry. The successful applicant must be prepared to work long days, be able to work independently, be prepared to drive considerable distances on occasion given the size of the study area, maintain care of a field vehicle, and be able to productively communicate and interact with public land managers, private land owners, and partners with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, USGS, and USFWS. Housing and a work vehicle will be provided.

Qualifications

Valid driver’s license (ideally own vehicle for personal use)

Ability to work independently

Patience and attention to detail

Avian nest searching experience, particularly for raptors or ground nesting birds

Raptor survey and ID experience

Plant identification and vegetation survey experience
