Deputy Sheriff – Bailiff - Courthouse (Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office) General Work Description :

A Deputy Sheriff (BAILIFF) with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office must be 20 years of age and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Class (B.L.E.T.), pass and obtain a B.L.E.T. certificate. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Make arrests, including use of force when necessary, and perform related restraint and self-defense as required by law and certification standards.

Prepare investigative reports using proper grammar.

Exercise independent judgment and operate a law enforcement vehicle in day and night emergencies.

Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels.

Possess the ability to load, unload, and fire handguns and shotguns under stress as warranted by certification standards.

Mediates disputes and advises citizens of rights and processes.

Process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients; read and comprehend legal documents, and prepare/crocess citations, affidavits and warrants; serve papers and summons.

Complete required continuing education to maintain certifications.

Maintain courtroom security as a Bailiff, ensuring safety of judges, jurors, witnesses and the public; open/close court and manage jury information as needed.

Demonstrate good communication skills in court; deliver legal papers such as warrants, subpoenas and court orders.

Escort inmates to and from the jail for court appearances and maintain custody during proceedings; transport prisoners/inmates by vehicle when required.

Provide assistance and administrative support to the judge.

Physical Requirements :

Ability to sit and drive a vehicle for extended periods.

Exert moderate physical effort, including walking, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling and crawling; may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects of moderate weight.

Education, Training and Experience :

Graduation from high school (diploma or transcript).

Certificate of graduation from Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.).

Previous law enforcement experience may be recognized for salary purposes.

Starting annual salary is $44,493; $2,000 more annually with an Associate’s Degree; $4,000 more annually with a Bachelor’s Degree.
