Job Summary: The
CVOR Tech
is a vital member of the cardiovascular surgical team, providing technical expertise and support during complex cardiac and vascular surgical procedures. This role involves assisting surgeons by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, handling surgical instruments, and ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available for procedures such as CABG, valve replacements, aneurysm repairs, and transplant surgeries. The CVOR Tech works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and nursing staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in the operating room. Key Roles & Responsibilities: Prepare and maintain the sterile surgical field for cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. Assist the surgical team during operations, ensuring proper handling of instruments and supplies. Verify functionality and availability of specialized cardiovascular surgical equipment (e.g., heart-lung machines, perfusion devices, retractors, clamps). Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and provide instruments in a timely, efficient manner. Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure patient safety. Assist with setup and turnover of the operating room between cases. Participate in complex cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries including: CABG (on/off pump), AVR, MVRR, TVRR, Aortic aneurysm/dissection repair LVAD implantation, heart transplant, total artificial heart Endovascular/open vascular surgeries (AAA, thoracic/thoracoabdominal aneurysms, bypass, endarterectomy, ECMO cannulation/decannulation) Support minimally invasive and trans-catheter valve replacement procedures (TAVR, TMVR, TVR). Follow sterile technique, infection control, and patient safety protocols at all times. Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Education Requirements: Required:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent training. Preferred:
Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology or related healthcare field.
Certifications: Required: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA or equivalent. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Certified Cardiovascular Operating Room Technologist (CVOR) preferred.
Required Experience: Minimum
2 years of recent CVOR experience
in high-acuity cardiac and vascular surgery. Demonstrated competency in procedures such as: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (AAA) Atrial Septal Defect Repair Carotid Endarterectomy Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Endovascular Aneurysm/Aortic Repair (EVAR/TEVAR) Femoral Popliteal Bypass Mitral Valve Replacement Pericardial Window Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) ECMO Cannulation and Decannulation
Skills & Competencies: Strong understanding of cardiac and vascular anatomy, physiology, and surgical techniques. Proficient in operation of CVOR-specific instruments and equipment. Excellent knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical asepsis. Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and respond promptly in high-pressure environments. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable to changing priorities. Commitment to patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
