Central Accessioning Laboratory Technician
Under broad supervision:
Works in the Central Accessioning Laboratory processing specimens for testing. Performs Data Entry and assists Accessioning supervisor and manager with projects concerning the Support Services and Accessioning Section. Processes samples in the Biosafety Cabinet Maintains the laboratory, lab equipment and supplies. Provides supervisor updates on inventory of supplies and a list of supplies that need to be replenished In a rapid pace team-based approach receives, sort, opens, removes from mailing containers and bag. Process all specimens that arrive during the day. Correlates patient identifying information on specimens with that on requisition form. Always notifies supervisor or designee promptly when there is a discrepancy. Visually inspects all specimens to determine acceptability for further processing or testing based on specific variables not requiring technical or clinical expertise (damaged in transit, leak, labeled and with proper patient identifiers). Correctly determines specimen acceptability 95% of the time. All discrepancies, problems with specimens and/or requisition forms are recorded on the day of specimen receipt if possible (Quality assurance and Specimen accountability). Works with supervisor to investigate problem specimens and resolve discrepancies. Ensures that the specimen requisition form is stamped with the appropriate time and date that specimen was received into the accessioning area before forwarding the form to the data entry section and transporting the specimen to the appropriate area for testing. Oversees workflow. May supervise lower-level staff in the absence of the Supervisor and Manager
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in a laboratory setting or a related area, which one (1) year in a lead worker, team leader, or supervisory role; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Laboratory Tech 3 (LST032) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require licensure.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification as a Laboratory Technician or Associate Degree in Clinical Lab Science, or bachelor's degree in related field with one year laboratory experience. Certification required within 18 months of hire.
