Description: The Radiologic Technologist I is responsible for obtaining diagnostic radiographic examinations at a technical level that does not require constant supervision. The technologist produces diagnostic radiographic examinations by positioning patients, providing immobilization devices, and selecting proper technical factors based on individual patient needs. The position requires restricting the radiation beam through cone and collimating devices to prevent exposure of radiation to unaffected parts of the patient. Portable x-ray examinations are performed in patient rooms, operating rooms, and emergency rooms. Operational procedures include identifying patients' films with names and x-ray numbers, ensuring films are correctly marked to indicate the side of the patient taken. The technologist develops exposed x-ray films using available processing methods. Patient requisitions are completed accurately with technologist initials, date, number, and size of films. The x-ray room is maintained in an orderly manner as directed by the head of the department. The technologist prepares radiopaque contrast media and assists physicians in administering these mixtures to patients. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, providing patient instructions, filing films, maintaining records, and receiving patients as required. Services and assistance are rendered to patients based on their individual needs and abilities with moving, turning, and positioning on x-ray tables. The role requires lifting a minimum of 5 lbs., pushing and pulling a minimum of 10 lbs., and standing for a minimum of 6 hours a day. The technologist identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care accordingly, considering factors such as age, culture, language, and sensory impairments. Communication with patients, parents, and primary caregivers must be conducted at an appropriate level of understanding. Adherence to the standards identified in the organization's competencies is mandatory.
