About the Role Are you interested in building solutions that help customers deliver cargo safely, efficiently, and at lower fleet costs? The Route Planning team is a 0‑1 team actively building smart route planning solutions that model real‑world operations such as delivering to hard‑to‑reach locations, maximizing fleet capacity, and staying compliant with changing navigation rules.
This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US and Canada. Relocation assistance will not be provided.
In this role, you will:
Own the design and implementation of backend services that scale with fleet size.
Work with the product manager and UX designer to build intuitive UI interfaces that improve the route planner’s efficiency.
Partner with the engineering manager and advocate for technical excellence on the team.
Navigate trade‑offs between moving fast and building for the long term, using customer impact as the guiding principle.
Ensure solutions simplify delivery for our diverse customer base.
Communicate work to engineering and sales partners to maintain a tight feedback loop.

Minimum requirements for the role
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of experience as a software engineer.
Demonstrated ability to execute in ambiguous environments and deliver customer value.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
An ideal candidate also has
Proven experience shaping and improving routing and navigation products.
A passion for mentoring and helping junior engineers grow.
A track record of thriving on 0→1 teams and scaling them through the post‑startup phase.
Experience operating as a tech lead or in a similar role that directly impacts other engineers’ output.
The ability and willingness to engage directly with customers when needed.
Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy Samsara’s compensation program delivers total direct compensation that is at or above market through a combination of base salary, bonus/variable pay, and restricted stock unit awards. The base pay range for this position is $150,237.50–$2,252,500.00 USD.
