Overview

Solid Waste Site Attendant at JCI is a full-time position with the Johnston County Solid Waste Department. The employee assists the public with unloading and sorting solid waste and recyclable materials at a collection site, maintains site cleanliness, provides information about operations and policies, and assists disabled customers as needed. The role is performed in inside and outside environments and may involve extreme temperatures.

This position is open until filled and is subject to regular supervision with review focused on public relations, site cleanliness, and accuracy of records.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and assists citizens with unloading materials from vehicles; explains recycling and sticker programs and answers questions; assists with sorting materials and storing in appropriate bins.
  • Screens material collected for proper content and for proper use of fee stickers.
  • Operates compactor equipment to pack garbage; greases and maintains equipment; cleans area of stray materials and sweeps; mows grass and trims site.
  • Maintains simple records of site activities and numbers of visitors.
  • Operates two-way radio to keep in contact with supervision and truck drivers.
  • Duties may require operation of County vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of policies regarding the collection and sorting procedures of various solid waste and recyclable materials.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies on waste disposal in various containers and methods.
  • Ability to establish effective working relations with the public and coworkers.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain simple records of work activities.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's license.
