Overview

The Department of History at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of 18th/19th-Century American History, beginning August 2026.

We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, the potential for excellence in graduate instruction, and the pursuit of an active scholarly agenda. The desired candidate will hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment with a focus on American History within the general period of 1783-1898. We welcome applicants with expertise in Native American History, especially with a regional focus on the Southeast. Applicants who can contribute to the development of our curriculum and existing programs, such as the Social Studies major and related minors/certificates/initiatives at the departmental or college level, are particularly welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will teach 6 courses per year: a combination of U.S. History survey courses and upper-level courses in their area(s) of specialization, including courses through the nineteenth century and per the needs of the department and in consultation with the Department Chair.
  • Teaches students in the classroom, laboratory, and/or studio.
  • Prepares content, syllabi, and University Moodle/curricular site for each course and/or lab assigned each semester. Communicates to students after reviewing assignments. Calculates and assigns grades (e.g., mid-term and final) through established procedures listed in the Faculty Manual and University catalog. Tracks and reports absences as directed by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Conducts research to create and add to knowledge in a field or produces creative work. Trains students in related research techniques and in creative production.
  • Posts and holds regular office hours each week per College and University guidelines. Engages in University-related activities including committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, events and scholarly pursuits as prescribed in the Faculty Manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
