Your Opportunity Stantec's is currently seeking a Staff Geologist or Scientist to support our team of professionals on environmental site assessment, remediation projects, and groundwater monitoring and stormwater compliance. This role requires an individual who is highly motivated, can problem‑solve, thinks critically, learns quickly, communicates well, and is detail‑oriented. The role is suited for a field geologist or scientist who works well independently and is ready to take on increasing responsibilities.

The focus is on field work with primary responsibilities that include executing assignments associated with environmental site assessments, investigations, and remediation; environmental compliance inspections and surveys; oversight of drilling activities and logging soils; sampling of environmental media such as soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater; and stormwater and non‑stormwater discharge sampling. Preference is given to candidates who can digitize soil logs, maps, lithological cross‑sections, and who have technical writing skills.

Your Key Responsibilities

Complete applicable company and client‑required health & safety training (including OSHA training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.

Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete entry‑level and routine assignments.

Perform outdoor, all‑season, on‑site geological and environmental investigation work at sites ranging from commercial/industrial sites to open and remote spaces. Expectation of a 70% field to 30% office‑based ratio across multiple projects.

Conduct subsurface geologic investigations in connection with evaluation of various media (soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater).

Coordinate fieldwork including subcontractor coordination, utility clearance, drilling oversight (hand auger, direct push, hollow‑stem auger, air vacuum), soil excavation oversight, installation of soil vapor probes, groundwater monitoring wells, hand auger drilling, soil logging, trench logging, surface water and stormwater sampling, and daily field documentation of health and safety and field activities.

Assist with preparation of work plans, sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports (soil and groundwater assessment, remedial excavations, well destruction, Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments).

Assist with preparation of final soil boring logs, cross‑sections, trench logs, and other report‑supporting documentation.

Assist with review and interpretation of environmental data.

Prepare permit applications for soil borings, well installations, and destruction.

Maintain meticulous note taking and daily documentation of field activities and communicate daily with the project team.

Reports to Senior Project Manager or Project Director.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

40‑Hour HAZWOPER certification.

Some projects may require completion of a background LiveScan check/fingerprinting.

Pre‑employment physical exam required.

Valid Class C driver’s license; familiarity with driving larger vehicles and off‑road driving preferred.

Ability to lift 50 lb. objects to chest height.

Willingness to frequently work at sites throughout Southern California (including hotel stays for multi‑day projects), with occasional work at sites in Central and Northern California, and rarely at out‑of‑state sites.

Expectation to work 10–12‑hour days on field projects; some work may require occasional holiday, night, and/or weekend shifts. All overtime is compensated.

Dedication to successful project execution and technical excellence, with a proven ability to adapt to changing scope and situations in the field.

Basic technical writing skills with a desire to develop further over time.

Values the importance of quality, thoroughness, and clear communication in field and office tasks.

Applies logic, problem‑solving, and resolves technical issues effectively under time‑sensitive scenarios.

Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within the technical team, internal clients, and external clients; collaboration is key.

Develops a working understanding of health and safety policies and procedures and demonstrates use and understanding appropriate to work.

Education and Experience

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or related field.

Minimum 1‑3 years’ work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience. Co‑op/internship experience preferred.

Time will be split between field and office environments. Field environments will require driving to and from job sites, may include long periods of standing, and can include working in weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and/or wind. Office environment may include periods of prolonged sitting and computer work.

Pay Range

Locations in WA, DC & various CA, MA areas – Min Salary $63,200.00, Max Salary $88,500.00

Pay Transparency In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus‑eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.

The benefits information listed above may not apply to union positions because benefits for such positions are governed by applicable collective bargaining agreements.
