Position Summary

Perform tow recovery procedure of heavy duty trash collection vehicles and perform roadside emergency troubleshooting and automotive mechanical repair work on stalled vehicles; tow or transport vehicle to designated repair facility; maintain assigned tow equipment; and perform a variety of other related duties in support of the Solid Waste Vehicle Maintenance Department.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED;

and Four (4) years of tow recovery experience;

and Two (2) years mechanical/hydraulic and air brake system maintenance and repair experience.

Course work in automotive technology, transportation technology or truck driving preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL),

Class A . Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire. Trainees must successfully complete OJT instruction for proper use of automated side loaders, commercial front loaders and rear packer systems. Preferred Knowledge

Operations, services and activities of a tow recovery operator and transportation program Techniques and methods of vehicle and equipment maintenance and minor repair Operational characteristics of equipment and machinery relative to refuse collection and transport City streets and roads Principles and procedures of record keeping Tow recovery hazards and standard safety practices related to the operation of a wide variety of medium to heavy vehicles and/or equipment Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to the operation of a wide variety of heavy vehicles and/or equipment Preferred Skills & Abilities

Operate a variety of light to heavy vehicle and/or equipment in a safe and effective manner Operate two-way radio communications equipment Adjust driving method to traffic, road, weather, load and various terrain conditions Use mirrors in maneuvering, judging distance and backing vehicles Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair Understand department policies and procedures Perform tow recovery and transportation activities Perform preventative maintenance and minor repair of a wide variety of light to heavy vehicles and equipment Respond to requests and inquiries from upper management Work independently in the absence of supervision Communicate clearly and concisely Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accomadation
