Job Description and Duties Under the administrative direction of the Chief Information Security Office (CISO) and the Career Executive Appointment (CEA) of the Caltrans Security Services Division, the incumbent serves as a prime technical security architect within the Security Services Division. Responsibilities include network security operations, technology and cloud architecture security design, and services. The incumbent creates and develops enterprise security standards, provides direction and recommendations, and ensures the enterprise network and cloud services architectures are properly secured.
Major Functions Lead security architecture for enterprise network and cloud technology, including design and oversight of technical implementations for the California Integrated Travel Project (Cal‑ITP) system and other Caltrans security systems. Operate and configure firewalls, Intrusion Prevention Systems, URL filtering, remote access, and advanced security monitoring and logging equipment. Research and advise on strategic design decisions, serve as lead security architect for network, application, system resources, and Internet of Things (IoT). Collaborate with the California Integrated Mobility Program, Traffic Operations, and Transportation Management Centers. Oversee operational and maintenance duties for all security infrastructure resources. Work independently or collaboratively as a senior technical architect, guiding IT professionals in securing system design and integration. Provide expert guidance to improve Caltrans’ security posture, investigate security events, and assist in remediation of risks and vulnerabilities, ensuring compliance with PCI DSS and other data privacy requirements.

Working Conditions The incumbent may be required to work extended periods in a computer room, may be eligible for telework based on Caltrans policy, and may need to travel to headquarters and other offices. The role may require after‑hours or weekend work, and the incumbent must be available to respond to calls. Class C driver’s license holders may be reimbursed for travel expenses.

Special Requirements Position will be filled via the California Department of Transportation Managerial Selection Program (MSP) process.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience as an Information Technology Specialist II; or Six years of information technology experience, with at least two years in a lead or expert capacity on highly complex or specialized IT systems.
Educational substitutions: • Master’s or doctorate degree may substitute for four years of experience. • Bachelor’s degree may substitute for three years. • Associate’s degree may substitute for one year. All substitutions are limited to one degree and must include 15 semester units of IT or related coursework.
Examination Information Candidates must submit a completed State application (STD 678) and meet qualifications by the final filing date.
