About The Job
Plans and coordinates the hospital-wide infection control program to minimize the risk of exposure to infectious and/or communicable diseases for patients, employees, staff, and visitors in accordance with established hospital plans, state and federal regulations, and TJC standards. Evaluates the program and implements changes as needed to improve program and ensure compliance. Plans daily departmental operations, maintains appropriate staffing, training, and supervision of location infection preventionists. Plans and implements department budget and program priorities.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with business unit policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.
Manages local Infection Preventionists and Infection Prevention responsibilities, if applicable. Adheres to the MedStar performance‑management cycle to evaluate and actively manage associate performance encouraging growth and development, addressing performance deficiencies in collaboration with HR. Implements team‑building activities to encourage a productive work ethic and environment aligning with MedStar Health's SPIRIT Values.
Identifies opportunities for growth or learning for direct reports to continue individual development. Ensures appropriate work assignments among staff and a consistent workload distribution meeting established productivity expectations.
Collects, analyzes, synthesizes, and organizes data for reporting to appropriate personnel, committees, and regulatory agencies.
Designs, implements, and maintains a hospital‑wide system for prevention, investigation, and control of infection within the hospital. Manages processes to reduce the risk of acquiring endemic or epidemic nosocomial infections in patients, healthcare workers, and visitors.
Establishes goals for the Infection Control programs in conjunction with the Infection Control Committee, Safety Committee, or other related committees. Coordinates and participates in setting quality standards related to hospital infections and monitors infections.
Oversees the development or appropriate modification of policies related to hospital Infection Control and consults regarding Occupational Health. Develops and presents education to hospital associates regarding Infection Control policies, procedures, and current practices and issues.
Provides consultation to managers in clinical and non‑clinical areas. Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure infection‑control standards and practices meet hospital and regulatory agency requirements.
Provides leadership during infection outbreaks to quickly contain the spread of infection to minimize harm and to support confidence in the system.
Reports communicable diseases to public health officials as required by regulatory standards. Maintains current knowledge base of infection‑control guidelines and practices incorporated into daily operations within the hospital.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and business unit in community outreach efforts.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.
Minimal Qualifications Education
Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, or another related science field required.
Basic understanding and education related to infection‑control regulatory standards, microbiology, epidemiology, public health, and in‑depth knowledge of patient‑care practices.
One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience
3‑4 years of experience in infection control/hospital epidemiology required.
One year of relevant professional‑level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
RN – Registered Nurse – State licensure and/or compact state licensure. Valid RN license in the State of Maryland. Candidate with RN background preferred.
CIC – Certified in Infection Control (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Investigative data collection and analysis skills.
Ability to use computers to collect data and prepare reports.
Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment.
Business acumen and leadership skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments, and external agencies.
Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
