Overview
Are you an innovative leader that wants to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of innovative solutions into our world-class existing fulfillment centers and logistics systems? Do you want to take ownership of solving the industry’s most complex problems? This role focuses on designing and implementing ground breaking solutions for automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. The candidate should be comfortable in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment with strong technical problem solving and project management skills. Amazon is seeking an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) who collaborates with internal and external technical teams and is responsible for the design, development and deployment of material handling systems across multiple building types. This role involves working with internal customers to define ambiguous problem statements, influencing a global team, writing technical specifications, performing technical evaluations on equipment, developing business requirements, identifying and scaling new technologies, generating multiyear budgets, and managing multiple large, high-visibility programs through the project lifecycle. Up to 50% travel is required and some work may be done from a corporate office when not traveling. Relocation assistance may be provided. Key job responsibilities
Drive the technical strategy for a material handling equipment lifecycle organization in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers. Provide program leadership and technological integration across multiple engineering teams. Serve as the single-threaded leader between multiple engineering teams, operations, and RME partners. Lead cross-functional communications and strategic planning for material technological deployment, introduce new tech products, determine KPIs, and drive standardization initiatives. Focus on execution excellence by creating mechanisms and processes that increase velocity while maintaining quality. Build relationships with Amazon Engineering and operations teams and influence senior leaders. Manage multiple large, highly complex programs through development and deployment lifecycles. Understand the business and technical requirements of product integration from mechanical, electrical, and controls functions. Demonstrate fluency in systems-level architecture, critique and debate tech design, and tailor communication for tech and non-tech stakeholders. Work with Operations, Engineering, and Data Science Leadership to manage strategy and project priority, ensuring resources focus on the most impactful projects. Define program/project scope and technical/business requirements and relay them to design, firm, and field engineering teams for efficient knowledge transfer. Evaluate solutions, make decisions balancing business value and technology risk. Help customers and engineering teams make appropriate trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput, quality, efficiency, maintainability, and operability. Identify standards and drive consistent application of engineering changes across North America. Build strong relationships with Fulfillment Center leadership and operations teams across multiple sites, including Industrial, Maintenance, and Process Engineering stakeholders. Communicate and present program status to Directors of Engineering and Operations. Data mine and transform raw thoughts into clear technical documentation. Travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 10+ years of experience in design, specification, project management, and execution of large-scale complex material handling systems, or domain expertise in industrial, mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil engineering, or industrial/construction management. 5+ years managing core project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, resources, quality and risk management, reporting and metric development/tracking. Strong understanding of material handling equipment and systems integration. Experience in manufacturing/operations/supply chain analysis and Lean Six Sigma process improvement. Proven track record of delivering complex technical projects on time and on budget. Excellence in stakeholder management and cross-functional leadership; strong written and oral communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, matrix environment. Demonstrated ability to use data and metrics to back up assumptions and evaluate outcomes. Able to roll up sleeves and operate as an individual contributor when needed. Ability to travel up to 50%, within the US. Advanced degree in Engineering or related technical field is a plus. Experience with material handling equipment integration and systems, conveyor control systems and automation, cross-belt sorters, and complex material handling systems. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and/or Six Sigma certification is desirable. Experience working with material handling OEMs and integration partners; track record of establishing standardized processes and playbooks; experience scaling technical project delivery organizations.
