Leadership Management Trainee - Operations

Purpose of the Position The Leadership Management Trainee Operations (LMT‑O) Program is a six‑month, paid intensive training designed to prepare participants for the role of Assistant Trainmaster (ATM). Successful completion requires relocation to a terminal within the CPKC network, with future relocations expected. The program includes classroom instruction, online training, workshops, projects and on‑the‑job training. Participants will complete an 11‑week manager conductor training course followed by 12 weeks of field training where you’ll learn the proficiencies required to safely lead operations and supervise yard and train movement.
Position Accountabilities
Learn, retain, and apply railroad operating systems, applications and local operating plans to assign tasks and improve operations efficiency.
Complete and pass management train conductor certification. Failure to pass will result in removal from the program.
Meet all written and practical evaluation requirements, complete assignments and projects within assigned timelines.
Effectively lead train and engine operating employees, serving as a safety leader through active observations, discussions about rule compliance and implementation of preventative measures.
Model effective leadership by committing to results, leading others, thinking strategically and leading by example.
Make critical decisions, prioritize work and align with CPKC’s values of accountability, diversity and pride, as well as the five foundations: operating safely, developing people, controlling costs, optimizing assets and providing service.
Position Requirements
Willingness to relocate across CPKC’s U.S. network upon graduation and throughout career.
Physical ability to perform demanding work.
General equivalency diploma or equivalent experience required; preference for post‑secondary education.
Ability to travel up to six months during initial training.
Complete all program phases, including written and practical evaluations, online independent learning and assignments within timelines.
Work all shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and all weather conditions.
Speak up and hold people accountable to core safety principles.
Strong time‑management, verbal and written communication skills.
Develop trust and credibility across the business.
Two years of previous supervisory experience in logistics or operational environment is helpful.
Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.
Valid driver’s license and U.S. passport for entry/re‑entry to Canada.
Training Program Location The majority of training will occur in St. Paul, MN; some on‑the‑job training will take place in various provinces or territories throughout the U.S. network.
