Job Overview
Oversee the collegiate policy debate team.
Plan and manage a summer institute for high‑school students to raise the profile of Georgetown debate, generating over $300,000 in revenue for the intercollegiate team.
Build and cultivate a dedicated alumni donor base.
Scout, recruit, and coach students to participate in the debate team.
Teach debate skills to all levels of students.
Research strategies to craft persuasive debate arguments.
Coach students during debates across the country.
Organize and plan travel to and from tournaments.
Advise students involved in campus debate organizations.
Promote the debate program to constituents both internal and external to the Georgetown University community.
This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to prioritize tasks and multi‑task, flexibility and proactive thinking, and a genuine interest in working with students and colleagues across the university. A high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, self‑motivation, and effective communication within the Student Engagement team are essential. The role may involve night and weekend work during heavy competition seasons and during the summer debate program.
Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation The position reports to the Director of Debate and Head Coach, supervises student workers for the office and contractors for the summer institute, and assists in selecting and training contractors for the summer program. The assistant director plays a critical role in fostering student engagement, civic discourse, and leadership aligned with the Student Affairs division’s values. The Center for Student Engagement is a fast‑paced, high‑energy environment, with extensive student contact and occasional extended hours.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 2–4 years of para‑professional experience.
Expertise in policy debate is required.
Ability to work with minors and families (specifically for the summer camp).
Ability to interact effectively with a wide and diverse range of students and colleagues.
Ability to prioritize work with a strong attention to detail, including travel arrangements.
Demonstrated flexibility in a dynamic work environment.
Familiarity with the Google and Microsoft Office suites, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
High level of professional and polished communication.
Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity and to provide physical support on site to student programs on an occasional basis.
Work Mode Designation This position is designated as On‑Campus.
Pay Range $41,926.00 – $65,090.00. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
