Principal Technology Product Manager – Data Foundation Location: U.S Remote

Position Summary Pearson Virtual Schools (PVS) is seeking a Principal Product Manager to lead the Data Foundation program as a senior expert and key individual contributor. The role is for an experienced, high‑impact professional with deep expertise and strategic influence. The Principal will drive the vision and execution of a critical platform modernization initiative, leading cross‑functional teams by influence across engineering, architecture, data science, and design. The ideal candidate blends strong technical acumen in data platforms and cloud architecture with top‑tier product management skills to deliver forward‑looking milestones on the program’s roadmap. Passion for innovation in the software development lifecycle, leveraging generative AI and intelligent agents to enhance product development and user experiences, is essential. This remote‑friendly role (with a preference for working hours that align with U.S. Eastern Time) offers the opportunity to shape the future of PVS’s platform at a strategic level.

Responsibilities

Strategic Vision & Roadmaps: Develop and own the product strategy and multi‑year roadmap for the Data Foundation program, ensuring alignment with PVS’s platform modernization goals and communicating a compelling vision to stakeholders.

Data Platform Leadership: Modernize PVS’s data architecture and infrastructure by driving a unified, cloud‑based data platform (leveraging AWS or similar) that replaces legacy systems, establishes single sources of truth, and provides scalable, real‑time data access via APIs while embedding data governance, privacy, and quality standards.

Cross‑Functional Leadership: Serve as the product lead at the top of the SDLC—coordinate and inspire software engineers, architects, data scientists, UX/UI designers, and business stakeholders—without direct managerial authority, exercising influence to drive decision‑making, resolve conflicts, and keep alignment on product objectives and timelines.

Product Development Lifecycle Innovation: Champion generative AI and agent‑driven tools to automate parts of requirements gathering, coding, testing, or analytics—improving development efficiency and product quality. Explore integration of generative AI into products for AI‑driven insights or personalization within the PVS platform.

Execution & Delivery: Oversee end‑to‑end execution of product initiatives, write clear PRDs, define user stories and acceptance criteria with Agile teams, maintain a groomed backlog for Data Foundation workstreams, prioritize features balancing strategic impact and user value, and ensure on‑time delivery of key milestones with adaptive planning.

Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders—including other Product Vertical leaders, Program/Project Managers, executives—to ensure the Data Foundation program meets learning and operational needs. Communicate progress, challenges, and next steps via presentations and reports.

Technical Depth & Decision‑Making: Use a strong technical background to make informed product decisions. Understand cloud data pipelines, database technologies, and modern data architectures, and trade off approaches with architects and engineers to serve the product vision.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of industry trends in data platforms, analytics, and AI/ML. Identify opportunities to incorporate new technologies or practices (event‑driven architectures, graph databases, advanced analytics/ML). Pilot experiments—such as an “AI agent” for monitoring data quality—and scale successful experiments into features.

Measurement & Accountability: Define KPIs and success metrics (data availability, performance, API adoption) to track outcomes and use data to inform decisions and demonstrate program value.

Mentoring & Leadership (Individual Contributor Role): Mentor and guide junior product managers and owners, share expertise across the organization, and act as a consultant for other product teams in ownership areas.

Required Qualifications

Experience: 10+ years of product management, with significant time in platform or technical PM roles, and a proven track record driving large‑scale initiatives end‑to‑end—ideally data platform or infrastructure projects.

Domain Expertise: Strong knowledge of data architecture and management; familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases, data warehousing or lakehouse concepts, ETL/ELT pipelines, and governance best practices; understanding of data privacy regulations and handling of sensitive information (education data experience a plus).

Technical Acumen: Comfortable discussing and understanding complex technical designs; hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern software architecture (microservices, APIs, event‑driven systems); grasp of AI/ML concepts and application in products.

Leadership & Collaboration: Exceptional cross‑functional leadership; lead by influence; excellent stakeholder communication; experience in Agile/Scrum; ability to distill complex ideas into clear proposals and updates.

Innovation Mindset: Demonstrated interest or experience in generative AI, automation, intelligent agents; track record of driving innovation, launching data‑driven features, improving processes with technology.

Preferred Qualifications

EdTech and Data Standards: Experience in education technology or highly data‑driven industries; familiarity with Ed‑Fi, LTI, or student information systems; understanding of K‑12 and online learning operations.

AI/ML Projects: Direct experience managing AI/ML product features or incorporating AI into PM processes.

Cloud & Security Certifications: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner/Architect, Certified Product Manager, or security/Data‑privacy certifications (CIPP, CISSP, etc.).

Leadership in Matrix Organizations: Experience driving initiatives across multiple teams or departments in a large‑scale matrix environment.

Advanced Education: Master’s degree in Business Administration, Information Systems, or related field; MBA or technical master’s is a plus.

Work Environment Location: Remote (flexible). Preferred hours align with U.S. Eastern Time to ensure overlap with key team members and stakeholders. Occasional travel may be required for on‑site or stakeholder meetings.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Interface with diverse teams across PVS and Pearson; expect regular video conferences, virtual whiteboarding sessions, and collaboration tools; strong self‑management and virtual communication skills are essential.

Culture: Pearson Virtual Schools values innovation, inclusion, continuous improvement, bold thinking, and customer obsession. Autonomy to shape product direction and support from a talented network is provided. Experimentation with new ideas—like AI in the SDLC—is encouraged in a safe‑to‑fail environment.

Compensation The minimum full‑time salary range is $155,000 – $195,000. This position is eligible for an annual incentive program, and information on benefits offered is available here.
