A registered professional nurse who utilizes the nursing process in providing nursing care and assumes the responsibility and accountability for prescribing, delegating and coordinating that care.
EEO/AA Minority/Female/Disability/Veteran.
The Emergency Department (ED) at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is part of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS). Bridgeport Hospital is a private, not‑for‑profit acute care, community‑teaching hospital located in Connecticut’s most populous city. We work collaboratively to provide compassionate care and utilize evidence‑based practice to improve outcomes. Our ED is a 45‑bed unit that accommodates 92,000 visits per year using an innovative vertical flow model. We are a state‑designated regional level II Trauma Center and Connecticut’s only Burn Center. The Bridgeport ED is also an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, Heart and Vascular Center, and the first Accredited Geriatric Emergency Department in Connecticut.
Within the 45 beds, the ED has Bridgeport’s only dedicated Children’s Emergency Department—a 7‑bed unit staffed with board‑certified emergency medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, child life specialists, and specially trained pediatric ED nurses.
In 2022, we opened a newly remodeled 10‑bed Behavioral Health Unit. The Behavioral Health Crisis Unit is staffed by specially trained psychiatric physicians, advanced practice providers, and psychiatric nursing staff.
The ED is staffed with registered nurses trained in Emergency Nursing and provides care for patients across the lifespan. Our residency program accepts both experienced nurses from other specialties and new graduate nurses each year. ED technicians serve as essential team members, assisting with EKGs, lab draws, splinting, suture removal, and ensuring a positive patient experience. The medical staffing consists of board‑certified emergency medicine physicians and advanced practice providers. As a primary teaching hospital, the ED works closely with Yale University emergency medicine residents and hosts nursing, medical, and advanced practice students from surrounding universities.
