Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1 – $34.42 per hour

Engineering Assistant 2 – $39.67 per hour

Engineering Assistant 3 – $45.35 per hour

What You Will Be Doing:

The Bridge Engineering Assistant plays a hands‑on role in managing and enhancing Alaska’s 1,077 bridges. Responsibilities include:

Conducting bridge inspections and analyzing existing structures.

Performing structural analysis, calculations, and preparing detailed plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports under the guidance of licensed engineers.

Creating structural details, calculating quantities, and drafting specifications for construction contracts.

Assisting with new bridge designs, repairs, retrofits, and construction oversight.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The role is based in DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau, at the 3‑mile building on Channel Drive. The office is casual‑professional, team‑oriented, and friendly. Bridge inspection assignments may involve travel to all regions of Alaska, requiring flights and sometimes float‑plane travel.

Who We Are Looking For:

Structural Engineering – knowledge of design and analysis of complex structures using various materials.

Problem Solving – identifying problems, evaluating alternatives, and making recommendations.

Written Communication – clear, concise, organized writing for the intended audience.

Additional Required Information:

Valid driver’s license.

Engineer‑in‑Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) certification preferred but not required.

Minimum Qualifications (Engineering Assistant 1):

Bachelor’s degree majoring in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution, OR

Bachelor’s degree from a non‑ABET institution + Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑in‑Training (LSIT) certificate, or verification of passing FE or FS exam.

Conditional applicants who will obtain a bachelor’s degree within nine months may receive an offer contingent on completion.
