Position Purpose

The Senior Director of Finance serves as a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing all financial functions of Girl Scouts of Greater New York (GSGNY). This role ensures the financial integrity, transparency, and sustainability of the organization through effective management of accounting, budgeting, audit, and compliance processes. The Senior Director of Finance partners closely with the CEO, Board Finance and Audit Committees, and senior leadership to provide strategic financial guidance, strengthen fiscal accountability, and support mission-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting

Provide strategic oversight of all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and cash management. Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CEO, COO, and department heads, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities. Monitor financial performance, analyze budget-to-actual results, and present variance analyses and recommendations to management and the Board. Develop financial models and forecasts to support strategic planning, growth initiatives, and risk mitigation. Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

Oversee preparation for annual audits, 990 filings, and all external reporting and compliance requirements. Maintain robust internal controls and fiscal policies to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with donor, grants, and contract requirements. Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and city regulations, as well as foundation and private grant guidelines. Identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring organizational policies meet the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Grant & Contract Management

Oversee restricted and unrestricted fund accounting, ensuring proper allocation, reporting, and compliance with donor intent. Partner with Development and Program teams to manage grant budgets, monitor spending, and meet all financial reporting deadlines. Implement tools and processes to strengthen fiscal management of government and private contracts. Leadership & Strategic Partnership

Supervise, mentor, and develop Finance and Accounting staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO, COO, and Executive Team, providing financial insights that inform long-term planning and decision-making. Support the Finance & Audit Committees of the Board with timely reporting, scenario planning, and analysis. Drive organizational financial strategy and sustainability through proactive planning, innovation, and partnership across departments. Qualifications:

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related fields required; CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential strongly preferred. Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including at least 5 years in a senior nonprofit leadership role. Expertise in GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting, with demonstrated success managing audits, grants, and complex funding streams. Proven supervisory and leadership experience with the ability to mentor, develop, and elevate team members. Experience in strategic financial management, forecasting, and board collaboration Skills & Competencies

Strategic thinker with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to translate complex financial information for diverse audiences. Proficiency in accounting and financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Abila, Sage Intacct) and advanced Excel skills. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
