The Vice President (VP) of Membership is a senior leadership position which plays a vital role in recruiting, retaining, and engaging MSSNY members through strategic planning, data-driven decision making and innovative marketing. In addition to developing and executing the organization’s membership strategy, the VP is responsible for the systems and processes related to member recruitment and retention. The VP also manages strategy, operations and logistics for member engagement programs and events, including MSSNY’s annual House of Delegates Meeting.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Policy Development: Partner with the Executive Vice President and senior leadership team to align membership and marketing initiatives with MSSNY’s strategic and financial objectives; develop and implement membership policies, pricing models, and unified membership strategies; oversee special initiatives, pilot projects, and institutional membership proposals
Membership Operations: Direct and report on annual recruitment, retention, billing, and collections processes for individuals and organizations; analyze effectiveness of campaigns and offers; recommend improvements
Member Benefits & Business Solution Partners: Research and identify the evolving needs of physicians across New York State; develop mutually beneficial partnerships with vendors to address physicians’ needs; secure agreements with Business Solution Partners that align with MSSNY’s mission; evaluate the impact and value of benefits offered and adjust strategies accordingly
Marketing Strategy: Develop and implement integrated marketing plans to support membership growth and engagement; oversee branding, messaging, and communications to ensure consistency across digital and print channels; measure marketing ROI through analytics and adjust tactics to optimize performance
Member Engagement & Communications: Address member concerns and grievances; keep county medical societies informed of decisions that impact them; represent MSSNY at county meetings, medical staff events, and public forums
Committee & Event Management: Staff and support MSSNY’s House of Delegates and Reference Committees as assigned; coordinate caucus groups and logistics for the annual meeting for assigned committees and sections; prepare agendas, minutes, reports, and resolutions for committee meetings
Information Systems & Data Oversight: Provide strategic oversight of membership database systems and reporting infrastructure to ensure data accuracy, insight generation, and operational efficiency; oversee dues billing and collections
Volunteer Management, MSSNY Foundation & MSSNY Alliance: Oversee, guide and monitor volunteer management for all MSSNY committees; work closely with staff liaisons; oversee MSSNY Foundation fundraising; oversee MSSNY Alliance membership recruitment and benefits administration
Qualifications
Minimum 8 years’ experience in membership management or association leadership
CAE preferred, but not required
Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential for interacting with members, volunteer leadership, and staff
Ability to provide leadership and direction to a team of 9 department staff members
Ability to oversee team development, training, and succession planning initiatives
Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes innovation and accountability
A strong commitment to providing quality service to members and stakeholders
Experience with database systems, AI, committee governance, and member services
