Associate General Counsel

position at the

University of Tennessee System .

This role is part of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), representing the University of Tennessee, a statewide system of public higher education. The primary focus is advising administrators at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and supporting Graduate Medical Education across the state.

Location: Memphis, Tennessee

Responsibilities

Advising administrators at UTHSC on employment law and academic, faculty, and student affairs.

Counseling on academic policies, faculty, staff, trainees (residents and fellows), employment policies, First Amendment, Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, Clery Act, FERPA, ADA, and student conduct.

Supporting Graduate Medical Education statewide.

Providing work direction to assigned paralegals, legal secretaries, and law clerks.

Advising and traveling to other campuses and institutes in the University system as needed.

Qualifications

J.D. from an ABA‑accredited law school.

Active Tennessee law license or eligibility for Tennessee license.

Five (5) years of civil practice experience in a law firm or in a corporate, higher‑education, or government legal office.

Record of outstanding achievements as a practicing attorney and excellent academic record.

Exceptional analytical, problem‑solving, diplomatic, and oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, demanding tasks and to prioritize tasks and work independently in a highly collegial and high‑performing environment.

Highly versatile set of legal skills, pragmatic and objective business acumen, and the ability to recognize the broader consequences of legal advice.

Ability to perceive and explain to non‑lawyers the practical application of law and policy in complex situations.

High degree of personal integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to accountability; initiative and intellectual curiosity.

Preferred Qualifications

More than ten (10) years of experience in the practice of law.

Litigation experience.

Higher‑education experience.

Pay Scale Type Market Range 20 with salary negotiable within budgetary parameters based on qualifications and experience.
