Job Purpose Assumes administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for the provision of a program of activities designed to meet the interests and enhance the functional abilities and self‑esteem of each resident. Manages employees to provide recreation services according to the facility’s philosophy, allocating resources efficiently and economically to ensure each resident achieves the highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well‑being.

Key Responsibilities

Gathers information to design recreation programs that meet residents’ functional levels, needs, and interests.

Develops and provides individual and group activities that are convenient in time, inclusive for men and women, offered at varied locations, and include seasonal events.

Creates and distributes a monthly activities calendar and a “News & Views” newsletter for residents, staff, and the waitlist.

Implements procedures to ensure all residents are informed of upcoming activities.

Develops and updates recreation services policies and procedures that reflect the facility’s philosophy and mission.

Participates in budgeting; provides financial information to the administrator regarding departmental needs and status.

Hires and retains qualified staff; conducts interviews, performance reviews, and appropriate job actions; ensures staff meet qualification and performance standards.

Maintains current skills and knowledge through continuing education and applies information to job responsibilities.

Participates in fire and disaster drills; in emergencies, carries out assigned duties to assure resident safety.

Plans and organizes recreational activities on a monthly, daily, weekly, bi‑weekly, and general basis, including:

Monthly activities calendar, “News & Views” newsletter, entertainment scheduling at Whitaker Glen, and outings to museums, plays, luncheons, tours, and shopping.

Daily encouragement of resident participation and daily phone check‑ins.

Weekly grocery shopping, regular shopping and banking trips, exercise program, yoga class, weekly event schedules, strength training supervision, and librarian scheduling.

Bi‑weekly Vesper services, movie nights with snacks, bingo with prizes, Walmart trip driver, social hour, and supervision of activities assistant and fitness instructor.

General trips: two travel trips a year (overnight with a chartered bus) and an annual Spring Fling event.

Purchases supplies for the recreation department as needed (bingo prizes, movie snacks, games, art supplies, books, decorations, etc.).

Provides activities that promote socialization: yearly puzzle challenges, ice cream socials, bingo, parties, movie nights, Vesper services, birthday dinner celebrations, annual Great Decisions class, presentations.

Acts as librarian between Whitaker Glen and Wake County Library.

Minimum Education Required Minimum two (2) years of college education with courses in recreation, education, social work, other behavioral sciences, or clinical services.

Minimum Experience Required Two (2) years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, with one (1) year of full‑time employment in a resident activities program in a long‑term health care setting; or, one (1) year in a supervisory role within a recreation program.

Minimum Licensure/Certification Required By Law Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body.

Additional Qualifications (Preferred) Qualified as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, or satisfactory credentials in a related field.
