Salary:

$5,369 to $6,535 per month (SR-22, Step D to I)

Recruitment Information: This recruitment is being conducted under the Operation Hire Hawaii (OH-HI) project, a targeted outreach initiative featuring an expedited hiring process, fast-tracking qualified applicants into job opportunities throughout Hawai’i. Applications will be reviewed for legal authorization to work in the U.S. Eligible applicants will be referred to the hiring department for consideration and an initial review. Duties Summary

The Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) positions perform professional work involving the protection and promotion of public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with federal and state laws related to the elimination and prevention of environmental health hazards. Level IV responsibilities involve interpreting complex technical data, evaluating specialized knowledge, and making significant decisions under general supervision.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Legal Authorization To Work:

Applicants must meet State of Hawaii requirements for citizenship, permanent residency, or other federal eligibility.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, biology, zoology, environmental science, or a closely related field; coursework must include at least three semester credit hours in college algebra or higher.

General Experience:

One year of progressively responsible professional work experience related to chemical, physical, biological, or related field of science, involving analysis, recommendation of appropriate courses of action, and preparation of clear written reports.

Specialized Experience:

One and one‑half years of progressively responsible professional work experience in environmental/occupational health, demonstrating knowledge of hazardous substances and required regulations, conducting inspections, ensuring compliance, issuing permits, and advising on environmental health program laws.

Driver's License:

Applicants must possess a valid State of Hawaii driver’s license at the time of appointment.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Clearance:

If required, applicants must undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check and be found free of disqualifying convictions within seven years. The cost for the records check is the applicant’s responsibility; upon hire, the employee will be reimbursed.
