UTIs Police Department (UCIPD) is a full-service, 24‑hour law enforcement agency providing professional policing and public safety services 365 days a year. UCIPD serves a daily population of more than 65,000 people across the UCI campus and surrounding communities. Your Role on the Team
Entry‑Level Police Officer (under the direction of a Police Sergeant or Field Training Officer) and Lateral Police Officer (representing a journey-level position). Both classifications perform under the direct supervision of a Field Training Officer (FTO). Officers are not expected to perform solo assignments until the department’s Field Training Program is complete. Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of UC properties. Investigate crimes and traffic collisions, prepare detailed reports, issue citations, and make arrests. Provide crime‑prevention education and serve as proactive partners within a diverse community. Maintain professionalism and adherence to department rules, university policies, and state and federal laws. Ensure proper care, maintenance, and operation of assigned facilities, vehicles, equipment, and materials. Support morale, teamwork, and the department’s mission through professional conduct and effective communication. Assist with special events, athletic events, security details, and collaboration with other agencies. Specialized assignment opportunities include System Wide Response Team (SRT), K9 unit, bicycle patrol, field training officer, detective, corporal, and specialized instructor roles. Sworn personnel must maintain compliance with training and certification requirements established by California P.O.S.T. and uphold professional standards in all duties performed. Required Skills & Qualifications
Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and court decisions. Knowledge of criminal investigative techniques and procedures. Experience with radio operations, recording equipment, and computer equipment. Interpersonal skills—ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public, establish cooperation, and de‑escalate situations. Proficiency in the use of firearms, police equipment, and operating law enforcement vehicles. Strong observational, memory, and report‑writing abilities. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and provide effective customer service. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite, and California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS). Knowledge of Orange County communication radio procedures and local ordinances. High school diploma or equivalent certification; valid driver’s license. Valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy enrollment or certification (entry) or 1+ year of full‑time law enforcement experience and a valid Post Certificate (lateral). Must complete UC Irvine Police Department Field Training Program. Must pass polygraph, background investigation, medical and psychological examinations in compliance with P.O.S.T. standards.
