Overview This position is a federal law enforcement criminal investigator (Series 1811) located at several federal protective service sites: Auburn, WA; Billings, MT; Phoenix, AZ; Salt Lake City, UT; San Diego, CA; Vancouver, WA. Compensation ranges from

$73,939

to

$131,610

per year depending on geographic location and qualification.

Salary The actual salary will fall within the specified range and is based on the geographic location of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities

Serve as case agent for interagency investigations and may lead teams of criminal investigators and other law‑enforcement officers.

Advise and guide lower‑graded investigators in investigative techniques related to homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, threats, fraud, embezzlement, weapons, explosives, and other federal criminal violations.

Conduct multi‑stage, comprehensive investigations involving individuals, groups, or large organizations at regional or national levels.

Prepare complex, in‑depth law‑enforcement reports and intelligence studies; direct and coordinate working groups on significant law‑enforcement activities and intelligence issues of regional importance.

Conditions of Employment

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Must successfully pass a background investigation, including credit and criminal checks.

Male applicants born after 12/31/59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.

One‑year probationary period may be required.

Must meet time‑in‑grade requirements.

Must complete optional Form 306 and certify accuracy of application information.

Must maintain a valid State driver’s license and be able to operate motor vehicles.

Pre‑employment physical examination required.

Position is non‑bargaining unit; promotion potential is not guaranteed.

Travel required: 1‑5 nights per month.

Pre‑employment drug test and random testing will be conducted.

Must be capable of carrying firearms and maintaining proficiency.

Position may require mobility to different geographic locations.

Qualifications

Minimum GS‑11 level specialized experience: one year comparable to GS‑09, including conducting interrogations, collecting evidence, evaluating intelligence, and preparing investigative reports.

OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of graduate education leading to such a degree.

OR less than one year of experience combined with more than two years of graduate education, equating to 100% of the qualification requirement.

Time‑in‑grade and SF‑50 certification required for current or former federal employees.

Education Applicants claiming education must submit official transcripts (official or unofficial) or a list of courses with grades and dates. For foreign education, credentials must be evaluated by a recognized equivalency organization; otherwise the position will be considered ineligible.
