Lateral Police Officer Application Process
Certified police officers may apply with our agency at any time. The application process will remain open year‑around. The start date of the testing process depends on available positions, applicant volume, and entry‑level testing schedules.
Once the testing process is initiated, all applicants will receive a Personal History Packet. Applicants must complete and return the packet by the due date communicated. Qualified applicants will be contacted to schedule a scored interview within two weeks after the packet deadline. Interviews are conducted via Zoom unless the candidate is local, then in person.
After interviews, applicants are assigned a background investigator. Upon successful completion of the background check, the most qualified applicants may receive a conditional offer of employment. The offer is contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph test, medical, and psychological evaluations.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $36.37 - $44.54 HOURLY ($75,649.60 - $92,643.20 YEARLY)
POSITION TITLE Lateral Police Officer (Current Certification Required)
REPORTS TO Sergeant
SUPERVISES Not a supervisory position
POSITION SUMMARY Responsible for performing general Police services, including protection of lives and property, enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes, and providing public assistance. A high degree of independence and initiative are exercised in accordance with department policies, city ordinances, and state laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patrol assigned areas of the city on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle to maintain order, deter crime, and enforce traffic and parking laws.
Respond to crimes in progress, accidents, natural disasters, fires, citizen complaints, and other calls.
Conduct security checks in patrol areas of businesses, residences, parks, and public properties.
Take appropriate action at emergency, accident, and crime scenes; identify, gather, and secure evidence; assist victims or injured persons; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; photograph or sketch scenes.
Prepare accurate and timely incident reports as needed.
Assist and cooperate with department specialists and other law‑enforcement personnel as required.
Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators; book arrestees/prisoners.
Conduct searches of persons, vehicles, residences, or open spaces; serve warrants.
Carry, maintain, and use firearms, baton, chemical deterrents, and tasers.
Render credible testimony in court; provide first‑responder aid to accident victims.
Investigate criminal and non‑criminal incidents, collecting, preserving, analyzing evidence, and preparing investigative reports.
Perform assignments in any department division as directed.
Provide assistance to city citizens as needed.
Attend assigned work location and perform duties as regularly assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
Modern methods and practices of police patrol, criminal investigation, identification, and administration.
Knowledge of federal, state laws, city ordinances, and evidence admissibility.
Department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
Geographical boundaries and major streets of Bellevue.
Interviewing and interrogating victims, witnesses, suspects, and others.
Active listening, needs assessment, negotiation, and consensus building.
Interpersonal insight, diversity awareness, and trust building.
Critical thinking, logical and creative decision making.
Sound judgment and decision‑making aligned with department values and the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
Effective oral and written communication, including court testimony and reports.
Safe and effective operation of motor vehicles, police equipment, and data computers.
Physical self‑protection techniques, including pursuit, subdual, and control holds.
Professional appearance and conduct at all times while on duty.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to perform extensive physical activities, including running, jumping, climbing, lifting up to 70 lbs, and pursuing suspects.
Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting for periods up to two hours.
Adaptation to inclement weather and high‑fatigue situations.
Ability to drive emergency vehicles and administer first aid.
Maintain balance, strength, agility, and coordination under stressful conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSES
Twenty‑one years of age.
Citizen of the United States.
High school diploma or GED.
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license throughout employment.
English reading, writing, and comprehension at the 11th‑grade level (demonstrated by TABE).
Good character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Certification as a Nebraska law enforcement officer or other state law enforcement officer.
WORKING CONDITIONS Police work is performed indoors and outdoors, involving varied weather conditions. Officers wear ballistic body armor and utility belts with heavy equipment, often operating from vehicles for extended periods. Hazardous environments include dust, noxious odors, construction sites, confined spaces, and infectious disease exposure.
