Job Description
The Communications Coordinator supports the Office of Marketing and Communications in enhancing the visibility, reputation, and brand of Mount St. Mary's University. This role focuses on writing, media relations, internal communications, and digital content development. The coordinator works closely with campus partners to share compelling stories and manage communications across platforms including the university website, social media, internal newsletters, and media outreach.
This entry- to mid-level position is ideal for a strong writer and communicator with a keen interest in higher education marketing, public relations, and storytelling.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Content Creation & Writing
Write and edit content for internal and external audiences including prospective students, families, alumni, donors, and employees.
Develop news and feature articles, event recaps, and profiles for use across print, digital, and social media.
Assist with speechwriting, talking points, and executive communications as needed.
Craft compelling stories that elevate the Mount’s mission, academic excellence, community life, and student outcomes.
Media Relations
Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and faculty/staff expert pitches.
Maintain updated press lists and track media engagement.
Support University Affairs and the Office of Marketing and Communications in responding to media inquiries and fostering positive press coverage.
Monitor higher education trends and regional/national media to identify timely media opportunities.
Digital and Web Content
Assist in updating the Mount News Center and other parts of msmary.edu with timely and engaging content.
Collaborate on email campaigns, newsletters, and announcements to ensure consistent messaging and tone.
Support social media campaigns with story leads, quotes, and repurposed content.
Internal Communication
Contribute to the development of employee and student-facing communications such as the Mount Messenger.
Partner with university departments to ensure important messages are shared clearly and consistently.
Additional Responsibilities
Assist with coverage and promotion of university events, including Commencement, convocation, and open houses.
Provide basic photography or videography when needed.
Support marketing and communications campaigns as assigned.
Coordinate and mentor student interns or part-time workers as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing, or related field.
1–3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, media, or higher education.
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Strong organizational and project management abilities.
Working knowledge of website CMS platforms and email marketing tools.
Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication strategies.
Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Basic knowledge of photography or video editing a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a college or university setting.
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, and content marketing best practices.
Understanding of Catholic values and the mission of Mount St. Mary’s University.
Salary Range $50,000-$55,000/year. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.
