Scope of Job We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in theoretical/computational Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics and Quantum Information (e.g., qubits). Responsibilities include delivering instruction at undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels; conducting research; attracting extramural funding; and participating in service activities within the department, college, university, and community.

Department/College Background The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenured‑track Assistant Professor position in theoretical/computational AMO Physics beginning Fall 2026. The hiring focuses on quantum optics, single‑photon optics, and quantum information science (e.g., qubits). Candidates will strengthen our current AMO research program and establish independent research programs that attract extramural funding, contribute to departmental development, and involve undergraduate and graduate students. The position offers excellent start‑up funds, salary, and laboratory space in a dynamic research environment.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field and postdoctoral experience.

Demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary collaborations and the ability to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research activities.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Strong productivity and leadership in research related to theoretical/computational AMO Physics.

Externally funded research and teaching experience are considered a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise in theoretical/computational quantum optics, single‑photon optics, and quantum information science (e.g., qubits).

Expected to strengthen and complement the current research program in theoretical/computational AMO Physics.

Additional Information UTRGV is a distributed institution; the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This security‑sensitive position is subject to the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan is the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) for positions at least 20 hours per week and 135 days. An optional retirement program (ORP) is available for positions at 40 hours per week and at least 135 days.
