Position Overview The Dance Instructor is responsible for leading engaging, inclusive, and energetic dance classes for youth, teens, and adults. This position fosters creativity, self-expression, and wellness through movement while supporting the department’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles and community connections.
Ideal candidates will bring expertise in dance instruction and a passion for making dance accessible, fun, and rewarding for participants of all skill levels.
What You Should Bring We’re looking for an enthusiastic, creative, and patient instructor who can create a supportive and inspiring class environment. The ideal candidate will:
Have experience teaching a variety of dance styles (e.g., hip hop, jazz, modern, cultural, or social dance)
Demonstrate effective choreography and age-appropriate instruction
Adapt routines for different ages, experience levels, and abilities
Show professionalism, dependability, and enthusiasm in working with diverse groups
Encourage self-expression, teamwork, and confidence in participants
Be comfortable with tracking attendance and managing class logistics

Lead structured and creative dance classes that promote movement, coordination, and self-confidence

About The Department The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) delivers inclusive programs, maintains high-quality public spaces, and promotes wellness across Alexandria. RPCA is a nationally accredited agency through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), recognized for excellence in meeting over 150 best practice standards.
Qualifications Associate Degree and four (4) years of experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certification or formal training in dance, performing arts, or fitness instruction
CPR and First Aid certification
Experience working with children, teens, or multi-generational groups
Knowledge of choreography, performance preparation, or cultural dance forms
Scheduling Notes Classes may be scheduled on weekday evenings or weekends, with possible participation in recitals, special events, or seasonal showcases. A consistent schedule will be established based on participant demand and instructor availability. Candidates will be required to pass a criminal background check.
