The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist supports the Lead Oncology Pharmacist in mentoring/training clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who work in the HPCC. The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist supports Hall Perrine Cancer Center by providing clinical and distribution services in collaboration with physicians and nursing staff to ensure safe and cost-effective medication therapy for patients.**Job Description****Job Duties*** In collaboration with HPCC team members, supports complex medication therapy expansions and services.* Assists in the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure the safe handling, preparation, and administration of hazardous drugs and participate in quality improvement initiatives.* Supports the education, training, competency assessment and performance improvement of pharmacists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy technicians. and other healthcare professionals in appropriate use of oncology-related.* Assists in monitoring new therapies to market and anticipated use in HPCC.* Serves as a supporting Preceptor to PGY1 pharmacy residents and pharmacy school students in elective Oncology Rotations.* Oversees the safe and effective use of cancer medications, including dose adjustments, monitoring for toxicity, and managing adverse drug reactions.* Participates in provider and multidisciplinary meetings, as required.* Serves as the medication expert for cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and supportive care. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure appropriate medication therapy.* Responds to medical emergencies in HPCC, as needed.* Reviews, evaluates and interprets medication orders for appropriateness.* Provides clinical pharmacy services through consultation, drug information, teaching and/or committee work.* Utilizes IV workflow technology to verify compounded sterile products.* Oversees distribution and preparation of sterile compounds including hazardous antineoplastic items; dispenses take-home medications to patients and their caregivers; and collects payment using point-of-sale system.* Documents clinical interventions.* Demonstrates evidence of continued professional development, specifically in oncology pharmacy.* Maintains a working knowledge of and complies with pharmacy policies and standards of work and laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution of medications.* Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.* Detects, monitors, and documents adverse drug reactions and medication errors.* Provides drug information to health care providers and to patients.* Develops care plans and provides double check verification of the care plans.* Trains and orients technicians and pharmacists and assists in developing training materials for the Hall Perrine Cancer Center Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacists.* Ensures that the Hall Perrine Cancer Center delivers quality services in accordance with pharmacy policy and standards of work and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution drugs.* Participates in quality assurance activities related to medication use.Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job- specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities*** Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of the following patient age groups: adolescent, adult, and geriatric.**Professional Experience*** Successful completion of an Accredited American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) PGY1 Residency Program OR 3 years’ experience with oncology patients required.* Successful completion of an Accredited ASHP Oncology PGY2 Residency Program, preferred.* Advanced certification in oncology, preferred.* Work experience within an ambulatory oncology clinic, preferred.**Education*** Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in pharmacy, required.**Licensure, Certification, Registration*** Must have current Iowa Pharmacist License or be eligible for Iowa Board of Pharmacy pharmacist licensure. Employment is contingent upon being licensed by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy by start date.* Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification required. Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP), preferred.* Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
