Job Description Under general administrative direction, the Principal Engineer/Architect manages, plans, assigns and directs the activities of several units or a group of professional and sub-professional engineering/architectural personnel engaged in a wide variety of design and/or construction projects. The essential functions may vary by assignment and may include: Plan, direct and coordinate the design activities of major sections working on complex engineering and/or architectural projects. Establish, prepare, manage, review and monitor organizational budgets. Establish and evaluate organizational goals; coordinate activities of professional engineering and/or architectural personnel with contractors, subcontractors, state and local agencies, and inspection/construction personnel. Supervise personnel, complete performance appraisals, and participate in disciplinary processes as needed. Establish design and construction standards; review and approve correspondence, reports, estimates and other materials. Write policies, procedures, correspondence and evaluations. Conduct negotiations with representatives of government and architectural and engineering agencies. Coordinate, interpret and enforce policies; confer with division managers, other departments, and state/local agencies. Make presentations to boards, organizations and the public. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications 1) Nine (9) years of verifiable professional engineering work experience (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary/chemical/environmental, transportation/traffic, or structural), with at least six (6) years as a licensed professional engineer. Two (2) of the nine years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5211 Senior Engineer.
AND 2) Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California. Substitutions for Engineer Specialty: A Master's Degree in Engineering may substitute for 1 year of work experience. A PhD in Engineering may substitute for 2 years of work experience. Notes for Engineer Specialty: Some positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO/ICC or an equivalent body. Some positions may require additional licensing or experience in areas such as Construction Management, Structural Design, Corrosion, Fire Protection, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental, or Instrumentation and Control Systems. Some candidates applying from outside California may be eligible for waiver until the required California license is presented. License or Certificate: Some positions may require a valid driver license. Working Conditions Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to weather, and extended periods of standing, bending, or walking. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, part-time, nights, and/or overtime.
