Heavy Equipment Mechanic

SMITH-ROWE, LLC – Mount Airy, NC

Position Overview

The primary responsibility is the preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance of heavy equipment such as Komatsu, CAT, dozers, excavators, haul trucks, loaders, cranes, backhoes, and other miscellaneous equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, engine (gas and diesel), clutch, and transmission systems on a variety of equipment and tools.
  • Documents maintenance and repair activities.

Education and Experience

  • Mechanical or related degree preferred.
  • Basic welding experience desired.
  • Crane knowledge preferred.
  • 1–3 years of prior experience maintaining heavy mobile equipment preferred.
  • Prior experience in periodic maintenance of heavy equipment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid CDL with Hazardous Material endorsement preferred.
  • Ability to work in both shop and field environments.
  • Safety‑oriented with compliance to all company policies, safety procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions, communicate effectively with supervisors, co‑workers, and the public.
  • Travel and overtime willingness as required.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and use personal protective equipment.
  • Good visual and auditory capabilities for a hazardous construction environment.
  • Ability to stay alert and navigate construction site hazards.

Environmental Working Conditions

  • Work performed outdoors under heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Exposure to various natural elements and terrain.
