$70,000.00/yr - $90,000.00/yr

Overview

A well‑established professional services organization headquartered in downtown Norfolk is seeking a hands‑on accounting manager to oversee a small but high‑performing accounting team. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this role is responsible for managing all day‑to‑day accounting operations within the company's collections accounting function.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing coaching, feedback, and technical support to ensure timely and accurate work.
  • Operational Oversight: Manage daily accounting processes including account reconciliations, accounts receivable, collections, and client remittances.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement strategies to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls within the accounting function.
  • Account Reconciliation: Oversee periodic reconciliations of client accounts to ensure data integrity and compliance with internal policies.
  • Payment Processing: Monitor and post payments and remittances promptly and accurately, ensuring the integrity of client records.
  • Audit & Compliance: Support internal and external audits, preparing schedules and ensuring adherence to regulatory and firm standards.
  • Policy Development: Maintain and update accounting policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Training & Development: Develop staff through one‑on‑one mentorship, cross‑training, and structured performance feedback.
  • Deadline Management: Establish and enforce departmental deadlines to ensure smooth workflow and timely reporting.
  • Client & Internal Communication: Coordinate with internal departments and clients to resolve inquiries, discrepancies, or billing issues efficiently.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 3‑5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least one year in a supervisory or lead role
  • Prior experience in collections or professional services accounting is strongly preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general ledger accounting systems; familiarity with collections software is a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a commitment to mentoring and developing staff
