Job Summary

Trains, monitors, analyzes, supervises, and supports the financial operations of the Microsoft Business Solutions software for the assigned Region within the Division including accounts receivables, accounts payables, payroll, and audits of the regional locations; ensures the financial integrity including accurate financial records; compiles and interprets financial information including cost and cash flow analysis and advises the Commanding Officers regarding the same.

Supervisory Responsibilities (50%)

Plans, directs, and supervises the work of assigned staff; trains and instructs employee in the proper methods and procedures; monitors work in progress and upon completion to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established policies and procedures; conducts performance evaluations and provides hiring/firing recommendations.

Trains, supervises, and supports bookkeepers/accounting personnel for the DFW Metroplex Command; reviews accounting records, ledgers and statements for accuracy and completeness.

Provides phone support to employees at the Corps for minor problems that arise in Great Plains and serves as liaison to DHQ finance department to resolve more complex problems.

Compliance Responsibilities (30%)

Verifies information and data of financial reports and investigates any discrepancies or lack of information and makes necessary corrections; reviews accounting system batches to ensure accuracy for posting.

Ensures the financial integrity including accurate financial records; compiles and interprets financial information including cost and cash flow analysis and advises the Commanding Officers regarding the same.

Ensures the accurate and timely completion in the generation, reconciliation, and review of all ledger accounts for on a monthly basis, particularly asset and income accounts; works with Senior Accountant and accounting personnel in preparing and entering all corrected journal entries.

Proofs and edits all receipt entries to the general ledger; ensures Salvation Army policies & procedures are followed with regard to receipt of funds.

Financial Analysis Responsibilities (10%)

Analyzes fiscal management and summary findings; evaluates and recommends solutions to improve the current problematic accounting situations; assesses weak spots in internal control of accounting, banking, expenditures, sales, etc.

Financial Responsibilities (10%)

Assists in the maintenance of the Chart of Accounts for each Corps; updates and makes amendments where necessary; reviews end of the month reports including, but not limited to, registers, postings, financial reports, and bank reconciliations for accuracy and completeness prior to delivery to local units for retention.

Initiates accounting system processes to compile, review, and analyze trial balance/accounts for integrity before closing the books both monthly and annually; ensures proper accounting of all journal entries into the General Ledger. Generates and verifies the accuracy of all monthly reports related to the close of the Great Plains Sales module.

Assists with imports and exports of the approved annual budget for each location into MBS; implements depreciation of assets schedules and ensure that appropriate journal entries in Great Plains to record assets for each location according to The Salvation Army policy.

Pulls daily reports with ACH transactions from Operating Account in Chase Bank and distributes to appropriate finance staff.

Assists with audit preparation for all units.

Maintain the financial files of the DFW Metroplex Command according to the Records Retention Schedule.

Other Responsibilities

Assists the Accounting Supervisor in various areas of accounting, and finance as needed.

Trains and provides guidance to employees at the Corps on the use of the financial software including steps to properly perform data entry for check writing, receipt entry, and all reports.

Participates in continuing education opportunities, conferences and seminars to enhance professional growth and encourages/supports continuing education of staff.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of accepted principles, methods, and practices of modern accounting, finance, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of Lotus Notes, Excel and Great Plains.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of general business administration, supervision and management.

Skill in the use of personal computers, laptop computers and general office equipment.

Ability to evaluate the organizations accounting and financial functions, respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective actions, develop and administer sound policies, procedures and budgets, and oversee the work of others.

Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources and to plan, develop, and implement responsible strategies.

Ability to scrutinize financial reports and documents ensuring integrity, accuracy and completeness of the same.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial records.

Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.

Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with Salvation Army officers and employees, and professionals in the community.

Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or related field

and

Four years work in accounting accompanied by experience working in a religious, charitable organization preferred

or

Any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Certifications:

Valid State Drivers License (Preferred)

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.

Ability to operate general office equipment, including a telephone, typewriter, computer, fax and adding machine.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones or speaking in person to other employees requiring assistance.

Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints.

Ability and willingness to conduct all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism.

Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5 – 10% of the time.

Working Conditions

Work is usually performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
